💙 Wrapping Up January — A Month of Growth, Learning & Connection 💙

As January comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on everything this month has represented — new beginnings, building routines, learning life skills, and celebrating people exactly as they are.

From everyday supports and 1:1s, to budgeting, cooking, movement, community connection, and inclusion — it all comes back to one thing: supporting people to live full, meaningful lives on their own terms.

Progress doesn’t always look big or loud. Sometimes it’s showing up, trying something new, building confidence slowly, or simply feeling supported and understood. And those moments matter.

As we head into the rest of the year, we remain committed to:
✨ Person-centred, participant-led supports
✨ Real-life learning that builds independence
✨ Inclusive spaces where everyone belongs

Thank you to our participants, families, and team for being part of our community. We’re excited for what’s ahead 💙

Here’s to a year of growth, connection, and living life well — together.

💙 Getting Assessed for Autism in Queensland – What’s the Process? 💙

If you’re considering an autism assessment for yourself or your child in Queensland, the process can feel overwhelming at first. Understanding the steps can make it much clearer and help you know what to expect.

Here’s a simple overview 👇

🧠 Step 1: Talk to Your GP
The first step is usually a visit to your GP. They can:
• Discuss your concerns
• Provide a referral to the appropriate professionals
• Help determine whether a public or private assessment pathway is suitable

👩‍⚕️ Step 2: Referral to Specialists
Depending on age and circumstances, assessments are typically completed by:
• A paediatrician (for children)
• A psychiatrist
• A clinical psychologist
• Or a multidisciplinary team (often including a psychologist, speech pathologist, and/or occupational therapist)

👶 Children vs Adults
• Children may be assessed through public child development services (longer wait times) or privately
• Adults are usually assessed privately by a psychologist or psychiatrist with experience in adult autism assessments

📝 Step 3: The Assessment Process
An autism assessment usually includes:
• Developmental and personal history
• Interviews with the individual and/or family members
• Standardised assessment tools
• Observation of communication, behaviour, and social interaction

This process can occur over multiple sessions.

đź“„ Step 4: Diagnostic Report
If autism is diagnosed, you’ll receive a formal diagnostic report. This document is important because it:
• Explains support needs and functional impacts
• Can be used for NDIS access or reviews
• Helps guide supports at school, work, and in daily life

✨ Why This Matters ✨
A diagnosis isn’t about labels — it’s about understanding, accessing the right supports, and creating pathways that better suit the individual.

At Gifted Ability, we support individuals and families after diagnosis — helping connect assessments to practical supports, daily living, community access, and NDIS-aligned goals.

đź’™ Everyday Moments, Meaningful Support đź’™

Support under the NDIS isn’t just about appointments or schedules — it’s about enjoying everyday moments, building confidence, and feeling included in the world around you.

Whether it’s sharing a meal, spending time in social spaces, or simply enjoying a moment of connection, these experiences all contribute to wellbeing, independence, and quality of life. Real progress often happens in the small, ordinary moments that make life feel full.

At Gifted Ability, we focus on supports that are relaxed, person-centred, and aligned with individual NDIS goals — supporting participants to feel confident, valued, and supported in ways that matter to them.

✨ Supports that fit real life.
✨ Moments that build confidence.

🍲💙 The Importance of Cooking & Why Slow Cookers Are a Game-Changer 💙🍲

Cooking is more than just making meals — it’s a life skill that supports independence, confidence, budgeting, and health. For many NDIS participants, learning to plan and prepare meals can make a huge difference in daily routines and overall wellbeing.

Slow cookers are a fantastic tool for building these skills because they are:
• Simple and easy to use
• Time-saving and low stress
• Budget-friendly
• Great for batch cooking and leftovers
• Safe and predictable

With a slow cooker, meals can be planned ahead, ingredients prepared at a comfortable pace, and food cooked slowly throughout the day. This reduces pressure around mealtimes and supports routine, organisation, and follow-through.

🍽️ How Slow Cookers Help with Everyday Life
✔️ Encourage meal planning and structure
✔️ Help stretch grocery budgets further
✔️ Reduce reliance on takeaway
✔️ Support healthier food choices
✔️ Build confidence in the kitchen

Cooking together also creates opportunities to practise reading recipes, measuring ingredients, making choices, and celebrating the end result — all valuable skills that transfer into everyday living.

At Gifted Ability, we love using practical tools like slow cookers to support independence and real-world learning. Small changes in the kitchen can lead to big gains in confidence and daily life đź’™

đź’™ What Can 1:1 Supports Be Used For Under the NDIS? đź’™

1:1 supports are one of the most flexible and meaningful ways the NDIS can support participants — when they’re used purposefully and linked back to individual NDIS goals.

Under the NDIS, 1:1 supports can be used to assist with things like:

🏡 Daily Living Skills
Support with routines, cooking, cleaning, personal care, budgeting, and building independence at home.

🚶 Community Access
Attending appointments, shopping, social outings, recreation, or building confidence in public spaces.

🧠 Capacity Building
Developing communication skills, emotional regulation, social skills, and problem-solving abilities.

đź’¬ Social & Emotional Support
Building confidence, reducing isolation, practising social interactions, and navigating relationships.

🎯 Goal-Based Support
Breaking down NDIS goals into practical, achievable steps that can be worked on consistently in real-life settings.

✨ Linking 1:1 Supports Back to the NDIS Plan ✨
For 1:1 supports to be funded, they must be reasonable and necessary — meaning they:
• Directly relate to a participant’s disability
• Support independence, skill-building, or community participation
• Are appropriate for the participant’s needs and goals
• Represent value for money

When used well, 1:1 supports aren’t just “time with a support worker” — they’re an investment in a participant’s everyday life, confidence, and long-term independence.

At Gifted Ability, we design 1:1 supports that are person-centred, goal-driven, and evidence-based, ensuring funding is used meaningfully and in line with NDIS expectations.

đź’™ Budgeting & Everyday Money Management for NDIS Participants đź’™

Managing money day to day can be challenging — and for many NDIS participants, it’s not just about numbers. Budgeting often involves understanding value, planning ahead, resisting impulse spending, and linking choices to longer-term goals, which can feel overwhelming without the right support.

Everyday money management may include:
• Remembering what money is available
• Understanding the difference between wants and needs
• Planning for regular expenses
• Managing impulse purchases
• Keeping track of spending over time

With the right strategies and consistent support, these skills can be learned and strengthened over time. We priorities this learning in our hub program because everyone (NDIS or not) needs a little support with money management!

✨ Top 5 Tips to Support Money Management ✨

đź’° 1. Use Visual Budgets
Break money into clear categories (daily spending, savings, treats) using envelopes, apps, or visual charts to make money more concrete and easier to understand.

đź›’ 2. Practise in Real-Life Settings
Learning works best when it’s practical — shopping, ordering food, or budgeting for outings helps connect money skills to real experiences.

⏱️ 3. Plan for Impulses
Build in a small “choice” or “fun” amount so impulse spending doesn’t derail the whole budget.

📊 4. Check In Regularly
Short, frequent budget check-ins help participants see where money is going and make adjustments early.

🎯 5. Link Spending to Goals
Connect everyday choices to bigger goals — saving for an outing, an item, or an experience helps build motivation and understanding.

At Gifted Ability, we support participants to develop money skills in ways that are practical, respectful, and tailored to individual needs — building confidence and independence one step at a time.

Because budgeting isn’t about restriction — it’s about choice, understanding, and empowerment 💙

“Real support doesn’t take over — it builds people up.”

The most effective support places participants at the centre of their care, scaffolding skills, confidence, and independence at a pace that works for them. Success looks different for everyone, and it’s built through consistency, trust, and supports that adapt as participants grow.

At Gifted Ability, we focus on participant-led supports, where goals, choices, and strengths guide the journey — not systems or assumptions.

💪✨ Why Exercise Is So Good for You ✨💪

Movement is one of the most powerful (and underrated) tools we have for supporting both our physical and mental wellbeing.

Exercise helps to:
• Improve strength, balance, and coordination
• Support heart health and overall fitness
• Boost mood and reduce stress and anxiety
• Increase energy levels and improve sleep
• Build confidence and a sense of achievement

It doesn’t have to mean intense workouts or a gym routine. Exercise can look like walking, dancing, swimming, stretching, playing sport, or simply moving your body in ways that feel good and enjoyable.

For many people, especially those living with disability, exercise also supports routine, emotional regulation, social connection, and independence — all important parts of living a full and healthy life.

The best kind of exercise is the one you’ll actually do. Start small, go at your own pace, and celebrate every win along the way. 💙

Movement is not about perfection — it’s about progress, wellbeing, and feeling good in your body.

💙 NDIS Management Types – What’s the Difference? 💙

When you’re on the NDIS, how your plan is managed affects who you can work with and how your supports are organised. Here’s a simple breakdown to help make sense of it 👇

🧾 Plan Managed
Your funding is managed by a registered plan manager who pays invoices and helps track your budget.
✔️ You can use both registered and non-registered providers
✔️ Less admin for participants and families
✔️ Support to understand budgets and spending

👤 Self Managed
You (or a nominee) manage the funding directly.
✔️ The most choice and control
✔️ Ability to use registered and non-registered providers
✔️ Greater flexibility in how supports are delivered

🏛️ NDIA Managed
The NDIA pays providers directly through the NDIS portal.
✔️ Funding is managed for you
âť— You can only use NDIS-registered providers
âť— Less flexibility in provider choice

✨ How Gifted Ability Can Help ✨

📸✨ Photo of the Month ✨📸

Our Guy! This month’s photo captures everything we love about what we do — connection, confidence, and joy in the everyday moments.

Whether it’s a shared smile, trying something new, or simply enjoying being out and about, moments like this remind us that meaningful support is often found in the simple things. These are the experiences that build confidence, create memories, and support participants to live life on their own terms.

We’re so proud of the growth, courage, and individuality shown by our participants, and grateful to be part of these moments along the way 💙

Here’s to celebrating the moments that matter — one photo at a time.
