As we go into Halloween tomorrow πŸ‘»βœ¨ here are our tips to incorporate speech development opportunities. πŸ•ΈοΈ

πŸ§™β€β™€οΈ Play pretend. Be witches, ghosts, or superheroes and practice describing what you see and do!

🍬 Name Halloween treats, great for vocabulary and sound practice.

🎨 Make spooky crafts. Talk about colours, shapes, and steps (First we cut. Then we glue!).

πŸ—£οΈ Practice sounds. Try saying boo, pumpkin, spider, or ghost for speech goals.

πŸ’¬ Use AAC or visuals, label costumes, feelings, and choices (I want, I see, I’m scared!).

Whether you celebrate halloween or not in Australia, every conversation , big or small, helps your child find their voice. πŸ’›

Happy Halloween!

Play turns language learning into something fun, natural, and meaningful. It's how kids explore the world and learn to connect with othersβ€”one word at a time.

πŸ’¬ 1. Encourages Communication. When kids play, they naturally want to talk, listen, and interact. Whether they're pretending to cook, building with blocks, or playing with others.

🧠 2. Builds Vocabulary. Different types of play introduce children to new words in a fun, meaningful way. Kids learn and remember words better when they’re connected to hands-on experiences.

🧸 3. Supports Sentence Building. During play, kids often combine words into sentences. This helps them practice grammar and more complex language structures in a natural way.

πŸ‘₯ 4. Teaches Social Language. Play teaches the rules of conversation and social interaction. taking in turns, listening to others and reading body language and facial expressions.

🎭 5. Boosts Imagination and Storytelling. Imaginative play helps kids create stories with a beginning, middle, and end. This supports narrative skills, which are important for reading and writing later on

Lately, at Little Leaps, we have graduated a few clients as they have reached their speech goals with us. Some of these goals have been;

🌟 Speaking clearly – helping with sounds and pronunciation.

🌟 Understanding and using words – building vocabulary and learning how to form sentences.

🌟 Listening and following directions – improving attention and comprehension.

🌟 Using social language – learning how to take turns in conversation, make eye contact, and understand social cues.

Therapy sessions are tailored to each child’s needs and often involve families too, so parents and caregivers can support progress at home.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication gives children a way to express themselves. That could be through signs, pictures, gestures, or communication devices. πŸ“•πŸ“—

AAC supports:
- Language development in everyday life
- Connection with family and friends
- Emotional expression and regulation
- Confidence and independence

It's most powerful when it's part of a child's world everywhere.
When AAC is available and modelled in all settings, it helps unlock speech and language and gives them access to communication for a variety of intents.

Who benefits from AAC?

🌟 Children who are non-speaking or minimally verbal. For example, children with autism, developmental delays, or apraxia of speech.

🌞 Children whose speech is hard to understand. AAC can support clearer communication while speech develops.

🧑 Children with physical disabilities that affect speech. Such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or Down syndrome.

πŸ”Έ Children with temporary speech loss after surgery or injury affecting the mouth, throat, or vocal cords.

⭐️ Children with developmental or genetic conditions like Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, or global developmental delay.

🌻 Children who are late talkers but understand language well. AAC can give them a way to express themselves earlier and support spoken language development.

What is AAC?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, it’s all about helping kids communicate in ways beyond spoken words.

✨ AAC can be:

πŸ–ΌοΈ Symbols & pictures. Pointing to a photo of 'drink' for water

🀟🏼 Signs & gestures. Using hands to say 'more' or 'finished'

πŸ“±Devices & apps. By pressing a button that enables your child let you know they need a 'drink' or want to 'play'

AAC gives children another voice while they build their speech and language skills. Every child deserves a way to be heard.

✨ Sounds of the Day ✨

This week we’re having fun with the 'K' sound! 🐱πŸ₯’πŸŽ‚

Practice doesn’t have to be boring, try saying 'K' words while playing I Spy or cooking in the kitchen. Kids learn best when they’re laughing and having fun! πŸ’¬πŸ’›

What 'K' word can your child spot at home today?

What does our therapy process look like?

It all starts with a referral form which you can access on our website, From there you can expect a call from us to further discuss your needs for you child and go on to have a formal assessment done with our Speech Pathologist. πŸ’¬

During the last school holidays we sat down with our clients and set out new goals or redefined current goals. Therapy looks different for every child. Some children need weekly assistance while some don't. πŸ˜„

The final outcome of our therapy is that your child can communicate in all areas and now longer needs our support. πŸ‘πŸΌ
