Oscar, a 5-year-old gorgeous little pug dog presented to Dr Alex, specialist Dermatologist at for recurrent ear infections and a head tilt caused by suspected middle ear disease (otitis media).
A head CT scan was performed by the team at which confirmed left-sided middle ear disease and a suspected cholesteatoma (benign, cyst-like ear mass).
Oscar was referred to Dr Dan, specialist surgeon at who performed a unilateral Total Ear Canal Ablation (Teca). This surgery involves removal of the entire external ear canal as well as bulla osteotomy, which involves cleaning and debriding the diseased middle ear.
These procedures will treat Oscar’s chronic ear disease, making him pain free and much happier going forward!
Each ear case is treated differently, and a CT scan is useful to assess the middle and inner ear. End stage or chronic ear disease often requires surgical intervention, but this is not always the case! If treated and managed early, your dog doesn’t need to suffer from ongoing ear infections!
