Pain intensity scales like the VAS are valid and widely used — but they only measure how strong pain feels at a moment in time.
Pain in chronic and autoimmune conditions is multidimensional — influenced by emotional, cognitive, and behavioural factors — and cannot be fully understood with a single number alone.
Recent research shows that tools which incorporate pain interference and functional impact provide a deeper understanding of how pain affects daily life.
That’s why I’ve shifted toward assessments that capture impact on function, flare patterns, and activity limitations.
Pain isn’t just intensity — it’s an experience.
