🫁 Lung Cancer Awareness Month

With around 15,100 cases estimated, lung cancer is estimated to be the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia in 2025. Of the 5 most common cancers in Australia, its survival rates are the lowest.

👀 In July this year a new National Lung Cancer Screening Program began, offering free biennial low-dose CT scans to high-risk individuals to detect cancer early before symptoms appear, which is projected to prevent over 500 deaths annually.

🥸 Movember is a month long campaign that aims to promote Men's Health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men's su***de!

💡 FACT: Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men. Roughly 79 men per day receive a diagnosis in Australia.

🫟 OCD Awareness Week: 12th-18th Oct

- OCD is estimated to affect about 3% of Australians in their lifetime

- The average age of onset is around 19 years with the disorder rarely starting after age 35

- In children, OCD is more common in males but females are affected at slightly higher rates in adulthood

- OCD is a complex disorder thought to have genetic, biological and environmental factors

- Having a family history of OCD increases the risk of developing the condition

🏠 World Homeless Day - 10.OCT.2025

📝 The 2021 Census reported approximately 860 people were homeless in the Mackay region

⛺️ More recently, in August 2025, frontline services providers like CASA Mackay stated they receive up to 180 walk-ins and calls daily with approximately 65 rough sleepers in the Mackay city area alone, and a general increase in people needing help due to the rising cost of living and the tight rental market

🌈 Chances House Mackay is determined to help the homeless people of our region, providing them with a safe and nurturing place where people find immediate relief, hope, encouragement and unwavering support
