The Vagus Nerve: Connecting Brain and Body 🧠🫀

The vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve and the longest of them all. It runs from the brainstem down through the neck and chest into the abdomen, branching out to many organs.

It carries both motor signals (telling muscles what to do) and sensory information (sending feedback to the brain). This means it helps regulate:

🔹 Heart rate and blood pressure
🔹 Breathing patterns
🔹 Digestion and gut function
🔹 Reflexes like swallowing, coughing, and gagging

It’s also a major part of the parasympathetic nervous system — the “rest and digest” branch — helping the body calm down, recover, and maintain balance after stress.

The vagus nerve shows just how connected the brain and body are, and why nervous system health plays such a central role in overall wellbeing.
