Using unaffected limbs to help relearn movement on the affected side! 🤔🤓

❓How does this work❓

⭐️ Bilateral facilitation/neural coupling: When both limbs move together the nervous system recruits motor neurons in a bilateral pattern, even on the affected side. This is called cross education or bilateral transfer, where activating the healthy limb enhances neural drive to the injured limb.

⭐️ Reduced inhibition/pain guarding: After trauma or surgery the nervous system often limits movement via protective inhibition to prevent pain or re-injury. Using both limbs can distract the brain from guarding the injured shoulder, reducing reflex inhibition and allowing greater movement.

⭐️ Motor learning/coordination effects: Functional, bilateral tasks for example lifting a box with both hands provide proper perceptive feedback that encourages smooth coordinated movement. This contemporarily increases functional range of movement compared to isolated single movement.

⭐️ Cognitive/psychological factors: confidence and perception of safety are higher during bilateral movement, reducing fear avoidance behaviours. This can manifest as increased willingness to move the affected shoulder through a larger range.
