💦🌈 Making Waves with Aquatic Occupational Therapy for Kids! 🌈💦
Our Paediatric Aquatic OT sessions use the magic of water to help children build important skills while having fun! The water’s buoyancy and gentle resistance create a safe, playful environment perfect for kids who need support with:
🎯 Improving muscle strength and coordination
🎯 Enhancing balance and motor planning
🎯 Calming the nervous system through soothing sensory input
🎯 Boosting confidence and engagement through fun, engaging water activities
Water therapy is fantastic for children who might find traditional therapy challenging — the water supports their body and encourages movement with less effort and more enjoyment!
Whether your child is working on everyday skills like sitting, reaching, or moving, or just loves playing in water, aquatic OT offers a unique and effective way to grow and learn.

🌀 Let’s Talk SENSORY!
Have you ever wondered why your child avoids loud noises, seeks out movement, or struggles with certain clothing textures? 🤔
These reactions can be linked to sensory processing — the way the brain receives, organises, and responds to information from the world around us.
Our Paediatric Occupational Therapists work with children who are sensory seekers, sensory avoiders, or somewhere in between — helping them feel more comfortable and confident in their daily environments.
🖐️ We support kids to:
🔹 Understand their sensory preferences
🔹 Develop regulation strategies
🔹 Cope with overwhelming environments
🔹 Feel more calm, focused, and in control
🔹 Have sensory activities incorporated into their daily routines to support focus, engagement, regulation and well-being
Through play-based, sensory-friendly activities like swinging, messy play, deep pressure, and calming routines, OTs create a safe space where kids can explore and build the tools they need to thrive 🌟

If you’d like support with your child’s sensory processing, please reach out to one of our lovely OTs today! You can contact shannon.shields@lifetimeconnect.org.au
Every child processes the world differently — and that’s okay! With the right support, we help them feel safe in their bodies and connected to the world around them 💛

🧠✨ The Power of Pretend PlayDid you know that pretend play is more than just fun — it’s a vital part of how children learn, grow, and connect with the world?
Our Paediatric Occupational Therapists use pretend play as a powerful tool to support development in areas like:🎭 Emotional expression and self-regulation🗣️ Language and communication🤝 Social interaction and cooperation🧠 Problem-solving and flexible thinking💪 Motor planning and coordination📖 Narrative and storytelling skills
Whether it’s running a pretend café, saving the day as superheroes, or caring for toy animals at a “vet clinic,” imaginative play helps children build essential life skills in a way that feels safe, creative, and fun.
TESS sometimes runs a Learn to Play program by Karen Stagnitti, which supports children in developing pretend play skills that are essential for emotional, social, and language development.
Through pretend play, children learn to:🪄 Use one object to represent another (object substitution)🎬 Take on different roles and explore different perspectives (role play)🧩 Sequence events in a story (storyline development)🗓️ Plan and carry out multi-step play scenarios (organised and extended play)🗣️ Build narrative language by retelling and inventing stories (developing story grammar)🧍‍♀️ Practice social scripts and problem-solving in a safe space (social flexibility)🌟 Build confidence and autonomy through creative expression
In therapy, we use play-based approaches to meet each child where they’re at — encouraging creativity while supporting their individual goals 💛Because when kids are playing, they’re also processing, learning, and growing 🧒🌈

😌💬 Helping Little People with Big Feelings

Did you know that Paediatric Occupational Therapists don’t just support physical skills — they also play a big role in helping children understand and navigate their emotions? 💛

Emotional regulation is a key part of a child’s ability to participate in daily life — at school, at home, and in the community.

Our OTs work with children to:
🧠 Understand and name their feelings
🧘‍♀️ Develop calming strategies (like deep breathing, sensory tools, or movement breaks)
💬 Learn to express emotions in healthy ways (e.g. using words, visuals, or body language)
🌈 Build resilience and confidence
🧸 Identify triggers and early warning signs of overwhelm
🎯 Improve focus and attention through regulation techniques
🤝 Strengthen social skills like turn-taking, problem-solving, and empathy
🎨 Explore creative outlets for expressing big emotions (like drawing, role-play, or storytelling)
🔄 Learn routines and tools for managing transitions and change
💡 Recognise body signals like hunger, tiredness, or the need for movement (interoceptive awareness)
And much more

Using play-based, sensory, and individualised approaches, we help kids build the tools they need to stay regulated, focused, and connected to the world around them.

Because when children feel safe and supported, they’re better able to grow, learn, and thrive 💙

🖐️ Fine Motor Fun in OT! ✂️✏️

Fine motor skills and strength play a huge role in a child’s daily life – from holding a pencil, doing up buttons, opening lunchboxes, to typing on a keyboard and more!

Our Occupational Therapists use fun, hands-on activities like:
🎨 Manipulating theraputty
🧩 Threading beads
🧤 Buttoning clothes
📌 Pinching pegs
🥄 Using tongs and tweezers
🧱 Building with small blocks (like LEGO®)
🖌️ Painting with cotton buds, Q-tips or small brushes
📎 Sorting small objects (pom poms, buttons, coins)
🔩 Building with nuts and bolts
🧵 Lacing cards or sewing with plastic needles
🧽 Squeezing sponges or spray bottles
✂️ Cutting along lines or shapes
🔠 Forming letters with playdough or wiki sticks
And more!

These games and tasks aren’t just fun – they’re carefully chosen to help children build the strength and coordination they need for writing, drawing, self-care and other important everyday activities.

By supporting fine motor development early on, we help set children up for success – at school, at home, and beyond! 💪🧠

🎉 It’s OT Week! 🎉
A time to celebrate the incredible work of Occupational Therapists (OT’s) and the positive impact they make every single day 🙌

At TESS, our Paediatric OTs work closely with children and families to support meaningful participation in daily life – whether it's managing emotions, making friends, joining in at school, or navigating life’s little (and big) transitions.

🌟 Occupational Therapy is all about helping children do the things that matter most to them – using individualised, evidence-based strategies that focus on strengths, goals, and participation.

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on our amazing OTs and the difference they make in the lives of the children and families we support 💙

Stay tuned as we highlight their work, share stories, and celebrate the heart of OT 💬✨
