In Part 1 of this 2-part series we discussed barber’s pole worm, Haemonchus contortus, what it is and why it is a problem on Australian sheep farms. In Part 2 we look specifically at drench resistance and how important correct treatment selection is to manage this growing problem. Always consult with your animal health advisor for expert advice on how best to manage barber’s pole and mitigate the effects of drench resistance.

The Power of Two: Managing Barber’s Pole with Avomec® Duel.

Barber’s pole worm, Haemonchus contortus, is a significant threat to farm profits and also has wider implications for Australia’s agricultural economy. Drench resistant strains of barber’s pole compound the problem and careful management is required. Avomec® Duel Broad Spectrum Drench for Sheep is a dual combination antiparasitic drench containing 1 g/L abamectin AND 50 g/L closantel for treatment and control of roundworms, liver fluke, nasal bot and itch mite in sheep. It has activity against resistant strains of barber’s pole worm and 6-week sustained activity against closantel-susceptible barber’s pole worm. Discuss with your animal health advisor how Avomec Duel fits into your worm control and resistance program. See product label for full claim details and directions for use.

Is the barber’s pole worm threatening your flock? Barber’s pole worm, Haemonchus contortus, is one of the major sheep parasites in Australia causing significant economic and production losses, especially in areas with summer rainfall patterns. Barber’s pole continues to be problematic as it has demonstrated an ability to rapidly develop resistance to chemical treatments, due to its short lifecycle and high production of eggs under the right conditions. In Part 1 of this 2-part series, we look at barber’s pole and the risks this dangerous worm poses. Look out for Part 2 which focuses on resistance and how best to manage it through best practice and drench selection. Always consult with your vet for expert advice on how best to manage this serious problem.

With sheep lice (Bovicola ovis) being a significant threat to on-farm returns and impacting the wider sheep industry and Australia’s economy, sheep farmers are crying out for a comprehensive tool to manage the problem. Fennec® is Australia’s original double active combination containing imidacloprid and abamectin to deliver a highly potent chemical combination against sheep lice.
The best time to apply Fennec is directly after shearing when the lice population is at its lowest, which provides up to 5 weeks’ protection against infestation. Talk to your animal health advisor about how an integrated approach with Fennec can successfully manage the lice in your flock. See product label for full claim details and directions for use.

Lice in sheep are a major economic threat to individual farmers, the Australian sheep industry and the national economy as a whole. Body lice (Bovicola ovis) feed on dead skin and secretions on the skin surface of sheep causing irritation, which in turn leads to thickening of the skin; damaging the fleece and causing significant yield losses if uncontrolled. In this two-part series Dr. Peter Bracken, Technical Services Manager - Livestock Boehringer Ingelheim, shares useful tips about controlling lice in your flock.

The first summer drench is important in lessening the worm burden throughout the summer and the autumn months that follow. The use of a first summer drench is still best practice in the winter-dominant and uniform rainfall regions of Australia. The aim of summer drenching is to remove worms in sheep when the numbers of infective larvae on pasture are low or in decline due to summer weather conditions. This reduces the number of infective larvae on pasture the following winter, thereby reducing the production cost of worm control and the number of drenches required. Talk to your animal health advisor about the best treatment to set your farm up for reduced worm burdens this summer.

As Australians, we all enjoy the world class food and fibre grown right here in Australia. But some Australians know very little about the farmers and workers who put food on their tables.
