Why do heels crack?
Cracked heels, also known as fissures, occur commonly at any age. They are often caused by:
- Lack of moisture
- Bare feet or exposed footwear
- Pressure on the soles of feet
- Genetics
- Some vitamin deficiencies.

Podiatrists can help treat crack heels by painlessly removing the dry, hardened skin. We recommend that patients help prevent cracked heels by applying moisturiser daily. If you’re experiencing pain or concern about cracked heels, we are here to help!

We’ve all heard about the importance of keeping active, and this is no different when it comes to maintaining healthy feet. Regular exercise has many benefits for your feet, ankles, and lower limbs. These include:
- Improved circulation
- Improved muscle strength and lowered risk of injury
- Easing of joint pain for arthritis
- Helping with diabetes weight management.

Sometimes getting back into movement can be a daunting task, which is why we are here to help. We recommend always wearing supportive footwear and easing into activity to build up strength and endurance. As always, make sure to book regular checkups with a podiatrist if you have any questions or concerns.

Tinea Pedis – What is it and how do we fix it?

Tinea pedis, commonly known as Athletes foot, is a skin infection caused by fungus. It tends to occur on the feet because fungus prefer to live in dark, warm, and moist areas. It is characterised by red, scaly, itchy skin and is often found between the toes or on the soles of your feet.

Typically, we tend to see it in those that walk barefooted in shared environments such as public swimming pools.

Here are some tips to avoid getting tinea:
- Avoid barefooted walking in public environments 🩴
- Regularly change/wash your socks 🧦
- Avoid sharing towels 🧖‍♀️
- Dry between your toes after showering 🦶

Here at Tooronga Podiatry we can advise you on a treatment approach best suited to you. Our friendly podiatrists are happy to clarify any questions or concerns you might have.

With the community finally being able to get back into sport we predict many of our clients will present with overuse injuries. A common overuse injury in runners and athletes is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS), pain that is present in the front and insides of your shins. Inadequate footwear, muscle imbalance and training errors can all contribute to this condition and early treatment is vital to a speedy recovery.

Treatment methods such as trigger point therapy, footwear advice and customised orthoses are of the ways we treat MTSS here at Tooronga podiatry. If you feel like this is you, give us a call on 9509 0334 so we can get you back on your feet, pain free.
