What is the TVA?

The Transversus Abdominis is the deepest abdominal muscle.
It wraps around your waist like a natural corset and supports your spine all day.

⭐ Why is this muscle important?

1️⃣ Your natural back brace
This muscle tightens around your waist to support and protect your lower back.

2️⃣ Helps prevent back pain
When the TVA is weak or inactive, your back muscles must work harder.
This often leads to tightness, fatigue, and pain.

What does it mean when the brain “switches off” the lumbar multifidus?

The lumbar multifidus is a deep stabilising muscle close to your spine.
It doesn’t create big movement like the glutes or hamstrings — it mainly provides small, precise control to keep your spinal joints steady.

After back pain (even if it’s a small injury), your nervous system often changes the way it controls that area:

1) Protective inhibition (the body’s safety mode)

When something hurts, the brain’s first job is to protect you.
So it may reduce the activation of deep stabilisers like the lumbar multifidus because the area feels “unsafe.”

This is called inhibition (your brain is not allowing full muscle activation).

2) Loss of timing, not just strength

The multifidus may still “work,” but it often fires:
• Too late
• Too weak
• Not consistently

So your spine loses that “automatic stabiliser” support during daily movements like:
• bending forward
• reaching
• lifting
• rolling over in bed
• standing up from a chair

3) Why it doesn’t automatically switch back on

Even after pain reduces, the nervous system may still remember the area as risky.
So the deep stabiliser stays underactive unless you specifically retrain it.

Why Does Back Pain Keep Coming Back?

After back pain, the brain often “switches off” the lumbar multifidus — the deep stabilising muscle that supports your spine.

Other muscles start compensating, such as:
• Overworking abdominal muscles
• Overworking neck and upper back muscles

Over time, the multifidus can shrink and turn into fat tissue, leading to weakness and recurring back pain.

Where Does Massage Help?

Massage plays an important role in recovery:
✔ Relaxes overworking muscles
✔ Improves circulation
✔ Reduces tension and stiffness
✔ Helps the body move more comfortably

However, massage alone is not enough to fix the root cause.
