Why “deeper” isn’t always better for your muscles. 🧐

Many clients come in thinking they just need a “deep tissue massage” to fix their tightness. They expect force, thinking that’s the only way to get results.

But yesterday, a new client said something that really hit the mark:
“Your treatment feels more like a myofascial release than just a deep massage.”
And honestly? That makes perfect sense.
It’s about working with the tissue, not against it.
Think of it like a locked door—you don’t always need a bigger hammer; sometimes you just need the right key. My approach isn’t just about applying pressure. It’s about slowing down and listening to how your body responds, allowing the tension to melt away instead of forcing it.

Because not all tightness needs more force. Often, it just needs the right kind of input.
With over 14 years of experience and having previously taught Remedial Massage at a Diploma level, my treatments are a blend of deep clinical knowledge and a hands-on understanding of how the body actually lets go.

Not all tightness needs more stretching.

Sometimes it needs something different.

• Soft tissue work
• Better movement
• Proper recovery

A lot of people I see have already tried stretching —
but still feel like something is “stuck”.

That’s usually when tightness turns into restriction.

And pushing through it, or stretching harder,
doesn’t always solve the problem.

With a mix of training and desk work,
these patterns build up quietly — especially around the shoulders, upper back, and hips.

The goal isn’t just to “loosen” things,

Desk work + training seems to be the main culprit for those heavy, tight shoulders lately.

What I notice about people who train consistently -

People who train consistently are strong.

But here’s what I often notice:

• They push through tightness
• They ignore small restrictions
• They think soreness = progress

And sometimes…

They don’t realise their body is compensating.

Training builds strength.
Recovery protects it.

Not every tight body needs another workout.

Sometimes it needs recovery.

Here are 3 signs:

1️⃣ Your range of motion is decreasing
2️⃣ You feel “tight” even after warm-up
3️⃣ You’re sleeping but not waking up refreshed

Progress doesn’t only come from pushing harder.

It also comes from restoring balance.

Care looks different for different bodies. 🤍

On Monday, I wrote about care looking like space and pause.
But care doesn’t always look soft.

Sometimes it looks like:
• Training 3–4 times a week.
• Pushing your limits.
• Chasing progress.

And then realising recovery matters just as much. ⚖️

Many of my clients train consistently — and the most common restrictions I treat are:
📍 Tight hips
📍 Overworked shoulders
📍 Limited thoracic mobility

Strength and tension can exist at the same time.

Train hard.

Last week, I shared a story about a client who had been carrying more than just physical tension.

There’s something else she told me.

After moving to Canberra, she said she hasn’t quite found a massage therapist that feels the same.

That stayed with me.

Because what happens in this room isn’t just about techniques.

It’s the quiet.
The attention.
The way pressure adjusts without needing to ask.

This is why I love being a massage therapist.

Some clients become part of your journey in ways you never forget.

Sian was one of my very first clients when I opened my Darwin studio back in 2021. She stayed with me through the years, right up until she moved to Canberra in 2023 — and I still remember her final appointment before she left. I told her we were planning to move to Brisbane, and she smiled and said, “If I ever visit my family there, I’ll come see you.”

Fast forward to 2026… and she really did ❤️

This week Sian and her mum — who was also my client in Darwin — came to visit me together. We shared stories, laughter, and a treatment room that suddenly felt like home again. Moments like this remind me why I love what I do. Massage isn’t just about muscles — it’s about connection, trust, and being part of people’s lives over time.

I’m so grateful for clients who follow my journey across cities and years. Thank you, Sian, for keeping your promise and for allowing me to be part of your story.
