This month, we will celebrate National Ag Day on the 21st, so we’re getting started early, showcasing WA growers who work hard to keep Aussie produce thriving!

Newton Orchards knows their apples — and they want you to, too! From crisp bites to cool storage tips, they’re sharing the best ways to enjoy your apples fresh, crunchy, and full of flavour. 🍏

As the days get warmer and longer, apples and other fresh produce are at their best when kept in the fridge - but do you know why?

While apples may look beautiful sitting in your fruit bowl, keeping your apples in the chiller drawer of your fridge slows ripening, locks in crunch and helps apples hold onto their vitamins, antioxidants, flavonoids and natural hydration, making every bite crispy, juicy, refreshing and full of health benefits for the whole family!

Did you know that slicing apples and storing them cold makes it easy for the whole family to snack smarter, with research showing people eat up to 70% more fruit this way? Dip them in a little lemon juice and they'll stay white and pristine for hours!

Freshness begins in the orchard and continues in your fridge- apples continue to respire after harvest which gradually softens texture and reduces sweetness.

By refrigerating your Newton Orchards apples you slow that process significantly extending freshness and maintaining that perfect quality for weeks. It’s simple science backed by generations of orchard knowledge and it’s how we keep Manjimup’s fresh apples at their best from our trees to your table. 🍎

When asked why apples should be kept in the fridge, our Quality Control superstar Sarah had the perfect answer:

“Apples are total divas. Leave them out on the counter and they’ll throw a tantrum: softening, sweetening and ageing faster than a fairytale villain losing their powers. But pop them in the fridge (or cool room) and it’s like hitting pause. Fresh, crunchy, nutrition packed apples for weeks!”

Sarah isn’t too keen on being in front of the camera so stepping in to demonstrate is our PDA/QC superstar Rita who’s more than happy to show the cool room in action keeping our apples cool to the core. 😎

Keeping apples cold isn’t just about taste… It slows their natural ageing process helping them stay crisp and juicy for much longer and locks in those flavonoids and antioxidants that make apples so healthy! By storing them in the fridge you protect their texture, preserve their flavour and get the very BEST out of every bite.

She’s done it again! We are proud beyond words to share that Nicole Giblett has been named the 2025 Apple and Pear Australia Limited - APAL Woman in Agriculture and will receive her award at the upcoming 2025 APAL Awards for Excellence celebration evening in Goulburn Valley on Monday 4 August.

This award is one of the highest national honours in our industry recognising not just leadership but legacy. It’s given to those who don’t just contribute to Australian horticulture but shape its future- and Nicole does exactly that.

For years Nicole has quietly but powerfully led Newton Orchards through change, challenge and growth. Her leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room- it’s about listening, backing people, standing firm in her values and never losing sight of what matters: quality, community, and doing right by the land and the people who work it.

In 2022 she was named APAL Marketer of the year and she is honoured once again not just for what she does, but for how she does it.

And her work continues to be recognised throughout the broader horticultural community- for those who missed our last post Nicole is also a finalist for the 2025 Hort Connections NAB Women in Horticulture Award to be announced this Friday evening in Brisbane.

Whether it’s in the orchard, packing shed, boardroom or the broader industry Nicole leads with integrity, humility and heart. We are incredibly lucky to have her and so proud to see her receive the recognition she so deeply deserves!

Congratulations Nicole and to all the exceptional finalists across both awards- Our industry is stronger because of you!
