Penthrox (aka the green whistle) will soon be available at Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Hubs across Victoria for intrauterine device (IUD) insertions and removals.
It’s a fast-acting pain relief option that’s already used by medical professionals in emergencies. Now, it’s helping to make IUD procedures more comfortable, so more women can access long-acting reversible contraception.
This is in response to a key finding from the Inquiry into Women’s Pain, which revealed that many women experience significant pain and discomfort when accessing IUD care. The introduction of the green whistle is just one of the ways the Women’s Health and Wellbeing Program is improving access to women’s healthcare.
The Peninsula Health Sexual and Reproductive Health Hub has already introduced the green whistle for IUD procedures, and its successful use over several years has made an outstanding impact on patient comfort and care.
