Bridling Bilbo 🦖
I use the term “Mouth Shy” here and not “Head Shy” because Bilbo is fine having his face touched, fine with his ears being touched, but as soon as you go near his mouth, he reacts. He’s aware of his size, so he becomes a giraffe, blocks you with his body and throws his head to stop you from touching it.

But by encouraging his curiosity and exploration of new things with his lips, I have taught him how to self bridle in an easy, stress free, cooperative way that makes him feel like he’s included in this new task.

I will always do my best to encourage curiosity in horses and it makes for collaborative training together, and really makes the process of introducing new things so much easier!

Once you’ve squashed the curiosity out of a horse, it’s not something easily won back. So give them the time to explore things and find a way of training together that appeals to their individual minds.

It’s been nearly 10 months since I rescued this guy, and I finally think he’s starting to trust in me.
