Ear Wax Removal - 109 - Compacted wax from regular ear plug usage!

This gentleman presented with binaurally occluded ears. He is a regular night shift work, so uses soft rubber insert ear plugs to help him sleep throughout the day. Unfortunately, the regular insertion and wearing of these has slowly but surely pushed ear wax deeper into his ear canal. Eventually, this resulted in the blockage that you see here and a dramatic reduction in hearing for the client.

After using olive for a few weeks, the client decided to give us a call. Fortunately he was seen on the same day and his hearing restored within a matter of minutes.

Ear Wax Removal - 108 - Why can’t all ear wax removals be so simple?

In all honesty, if ear wax removal was this simple all of the time we wouldn’t have much of a business. This removal is from one of our regular clients who comes to see us every 3/4 months.

This client blocks with wax quite regularly as she has a narrow entrance to the ear canal and creates particularly dry ear wax. This combination prevents the natural migration of ear wax that keeps most of us from needing professional removal. She chooses to come and see us just before the build up begins to cause her problems, which after some trial and error we have worked out to be around every 14 weeks. Hence the super straightforward removal you see here.

This client presented with both ears fully occluded with hard, impacted wax. This video shows the removal of the wax from right ear where a fungal ear infection (otomycosis) was found lurking beneath.

The infection is clearly visible in the form of furry looking white spores, on the smaller piece of dark ear wax that was removed around the 3 minute mark. This client regularly suffers from otomycosis and is usually treated with anti fugal ear drops by their GP (usually after ear wax removal is used to clear the ear canal of any wax, debris and large amounts of the infectious material).

The wax removal itself proved tricky initially as it was a very dry, large and tightly packed piece of wax which had not been pre softened with olive oil. Micro suction was used initially to peel the wax away from the ear canal and loosen its grip, before an ear hook was used to delicately slide between the wax and the ear canal, to allow us to roll the plug forwards on the canal.

All in all, a satisfying outcome for the client who has reported back that his treatment for the otomycosis has been successful and no follow up is needed with us.

It’s safe to say our client was surprised when we removed this much wax from their “good” ear!

One of the larger blockages we have ever had!
Note how small the zoellner suction tubes looks against the wax, in comparison to some of the other videos.
