🩸 Did you know that no two women experience PMS in the same way?
🩸 Or that a staggering 70-90% experience symptoms of PMS in their menstruating years?
🩸 PMS is commonly seen as a trivial health issue, but PMS can have a marked impact on quality of life 😩
🩸 In Naturopathic medicine a smooth menstruation is seen as a sign of health and PMS viewed as an imbalance which CAN BE CORRECTED 😁
🩸 Addressing underlying causes can significantly improve overall health and well-being as well as eliminating PMS symptoms ⚖️
🩸 The herbs and nutrients with the greatest clinical evidence for PMS (performing excellently in randomized clinical trials are chaste tree, saffron, b6, magnesium and calcium 🌱
🩸 Other helpful faves of mine to use for support are zinc, selenium & iodine
Ready to get off your PMS rollercoaster 🎢?

Sunday thoughts 💫

My top tips for a restful nights sleep! 💤
• Avoid high tyramine foods after 5pm (these are aged foods e.g. cheeses, chocolate, cured meats)
• Avoid eating starchy foods and big meals after 5pm eg white grains, pasta, huge portions late at night
• Make sure the bedroom is completely dark and free from noise (use ear plugs if need)
• Create a sleep promoting environment that is comfortable (cool, quiet, dark)
• Avoid using an electric blanket (or warm up then unplug from wall)
• Electrical appliances and mobile phones should be at a distance of one metre or more from bed, or put on flight mode
• Avoid watching TV in bed
• Stop all work (including social networking on computer) at least 1 hour before bed
• Avoid ci******es 2 hours before bed/or QUIT!
• Avoid exercising too late at night
• Avoid naps late in the afternoon...but Power nap 20 minutes before 2pm if need / or 2hrs (6-8 hrs after waking)
• Nasal breathing is essential/ close your mouth! Breathing nasal strips open up nasal passages
• Establish a regular bedtime routine (no later than 10pm is recommended)
• Engage in a relaxing no alerting activity prior to bed eg reading, relaxation practice, meditation
• Cut out alcohol, this always helps!
• Avoid caffeine, if you must have it swap to green or black tea and only in the morning
• Avoid big meals before bed

Stress is the biggest issue I see disrupting sleep in clinic (that and kids and animals plonking themselves on the bed at 2am 😝)
Other factors such as hormone changes, thyroid issues, pain do play a huge part in dysregulating sleep though and this is where natural medicine shines in relieving symptoms

Time to sort your sleep out?

Do you struggle to think clearly? 🤔
Ever feel fuzzy and heavy in the head?
Are you often feeling a lack of mental clarity, forgetful or confused?
You may have “brain fog”
It’s a lot more common than you think, in fact most of my patients come to me saying they have it on a daily basis 💭 mainly as I work predominantly with perimenopausal and menopausal women- during this period of change our brains are re- wiring and responsive to the fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone, which is greatly responsible for brain fog during this time
🛑 Searching for your root cause is always my priority, then we can really implement positive and lasting change 🛑
In this instance I would then focus on hormone supports, plus hydration, sleep, removing food sensitivity and trying to reduce stress levels
Interested in reducing your brain fog? 🧠

Prioritize sleep 💤 for hormone balance
🌿 Sleep affects many hormones in the body including those related to stress or hunger and getting regular sleep can help with hormone regulation
🌿 If cortisol is high following a poor sleep this can disrupt the relationship between estrogen and progesterone and cause the thyroid gland to slow down
🌿 Poor sleep disrupts the production and levels of hunger hormones in the body too, disrupting insulin and leading the sugar cravings
🌿 If you are struggling with sleep and wake feeling groggy, or you are fatigued through the day reach out so that we can discuss lifestyle changes, dietary modifications and nutritional and herbal medicine to get you to sleep through the night

Do you have difficulty waking up in the morning and need coffee to get going?
Have you recently gained weight, especially around the middle?
Do you feel like you get every cold and flu that is going around?
Do you have more difficulty dealing with stress and pressure than you used to?
Do you have a low libido?
Do you frequently feel lightheaded upon standing quickly?
Do you struggle with poor memory or “brain fog”?
Do you feel especially tired in the mornings and afternoons between 3-5pm?
Do you feel the need to snack or eat frequently to maintain a normal blood sugar?
Do you crave salty foods?
Do you feel extremely tired between 7-10pm but get a second wind if you stay up later?
Do you struggle with PMS: heavy bleeding, moodiness, fatigue during menstrual cycle?
Do you frequently have pain in the upper back or neck with no apparent reason?
Do you notice improvement of these symptoms if stress levels are lower, such as during a holiday or time away from work?
If you answered yes to 5 or more of these questions then you may have adrenal insufficiency/ fatigue…and guess what, your GP is not testing for it
Common triggers such as a prolonged stressful busy lifestyle, poor diet, lack of sleep, chronic pain cause the adrenals to pump out large amounts of adrenal hormones over a prolonged period of time. Our body is simply not designed to do this and in fact these stress hormones will end up adversely affecting other body systems, such as the brain. In response, our adrenals are shut down, causing adrenal insufficiency or fatigue. So adrenal fatigue is not thought to be caused by a lack of adrenal hormones or the adrenals not being able to keep up with our stressful lives and using up all the hormones, but by our own body’s protective mechanisms.
This leaves us permanently tired, anxious, struggling to sleep and piling on weight
I have been helping women overcome fatigue for 16 years in clinical practice now - is it your turn?

The Science of Stress and Neuroplasticity

Ongoing stress can affect the structure and function of different areas of the brain, as it is designed to reshape and rewire itself in response to different experiences, thoughts and emotions
🌿The hippocampus (involved in memory, learning and emotion) can shrink in size due to retracted dendrites of the neurons and synaptic aberrations, exacerbating emotional responses such as sadness or worry
🌿Neuroplastic remodelling has been shown in regions involved in anxiety and mood states, such as the amygdala (involved in fear and worry) and pre-frontal cortex
🌿Low levels of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) have been found in mood and stress disorders. BDNF is involved in memory and cognition and exerts protective activity against the effects of stress

☀️ Natural Solutions to Relieve, Restore and Rebuild Mental Wellbeing: By ensuring adequate protective (i.e. neurotrophic) factors, using targeted herbs, nutrition and lifestyle tools, we can offset maladaptive brain plasticity and promote beneficial plasticity (i.e. neurogenesis)
☀️ Natural medicine offers holistic tools and strategies that are easy to implement and can be tailored to an individual’s stress, anxiety or mood states, focusing on three core areas:
💜Relieve symptoms using targeted herbal formulas for stress, anxiety and mood symptoms and support neurotrophic pathways, as well as addressing underlying drivers (i.e. inflammation) that impact a healthy stress response
💜Restore a healthy stress response using core nutrients including condition specific magnesium combinations and B vitamins for stress adaptation, mood, sleep, healthy neurotransmitter synthesis and energy production.
💜Our gut and brain are interconnected via a two-way communication system known as the ‘gut-brain axis’. Targeting vagal nerve responsiveness and a healthy gut microbiota with specific probiotic strains can restore a healthy microbiota gut-brain axis and modulate stress response
💜Rebuild resilience by addressing drivers and lifestyle factors including diet, social support, therapy, movement, sleep hygiene and some device-based technologies

🌸 Let’s talk about reproductive hormones

Did you know that your menstrual cycle, fertility, and overall reproductive health are controlled by a delicate interplay of hormones? 👩‍🔬

Here are some key players:

🔸 Estrogen: This hormone is responsible for thickening the uterine lining and promoting ovulation. It also plays a role in bone health, mood regulation, and more.

🔸 Progesterone: After ovulation, this hormone helps prepare the uterus for potential pregnancy. It also helps regulate the menstrual cycle and can have a calming effect on the body, it’s vital for mood and brain health, it drops during perimenopause leading to symptoms of imbalance, so is my number one hormone to support during this time

🔸 Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH): These hormones are produced by the pituitary gland and help stimulate the growth and release of eggs from the ovaries- these are great hormones to check on a day 2 blood test as you progress through perimenopause to see how far you are progressing - they rise as peri gets further along

🔸 Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH): This hormone controls the release of FSH and LH from the pituitary gland.

🔸 Androgens: Though often thought of as "male" hormones, androgens like testosterone also play a role in women's reproductive health by influencing libido, muscle mass, and more- important to check in menopause as commonly low then and can give great relief of tiredness and low mood when supported

Of course, these hormones don't always behave predictably, and imbalances can lead to a variety of issues like irregular periods, fertility problems, and more. But understanding the basics can help you better navigate your own reproductive health! 💪

One of the most common patterns of hormone imbalance I see in my practice is low progesterone
Progesterone is vital for supporting a regular, predictable cycle with normal bleeding and regulated mood (especially in the second half), it calms the mind, reduces anxiety and supports quality sleep, supports our ability to deal with stress and have a calm digestion. Pretty important right?!
1 0 signs you might be low in progesterone
🌿 irregular or skipped periods is a sign you are not ovulating and producing progesterone
🌿 spotting before your period for 2 or more days
🌿 you are not ovulating (you can check this through physical signs)
🌿 moodiness or an increase in anxiety, depression in the days leading up to your period
🌿 bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, water retention leading up to your period
🌿 problems sleeping especially in the second half of your cycle
🌿 acne prior to your period
🌿 you are in your 40s, park progesterone occurs at late 20s-early 30s, usually then it’s a gradual decline!
🌿 you have a short second half of the cycle
🌿 you have issues conceiving or early pregnancy loss

There can also be underlying causes of low progesterone to consider such as PCOS, low thyroid function, dieting, over training, stress, it all plays a part

The good news is there are SO MANY ways to support your progesterone levels with natural medicine - once I identify your hormone pattern then supporting your hormones with nutrition, herbs, nutrients, lifestyle changes can be so effective
