On-going education is all part of staying at the top of your game in surgery. I was fortunate to spend two days at the Fresno Heart and Surgical Hospital with Dr Kelvin Higa, one of the most respected bariatric surgeons in the world, along with friends and colleagues Dr Mo Atalla of Melbourne, and Dr Carla Gillespie from Sydney.
Learning ways to run my clinic more efficiently and effectively were some of the takeaway points I learned. Also trying out the new Echelon 4000 stapler that is not yet released and will be the most advanced stapler in the whole world - it was able to successfully staple a thick, tough piece of steak - very impressive!

Patients of Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast are now able to have Gastric Bypass surgery locally! I will be operating out of Mater Rockhampton and consulting out of .bariatricgeneralsurgery .

Why would someone be more suitable for a Gastric Bypass procedure than Sleeve Gastrectomy?
-More severe metabolic disease (diabetes/ fatty liver/ hypertension/ dyslipidemia)
-Higher BMI
-Reflux

Our experience is that patients in this group do better long-term. The Mini Gastric Bypass takes the nearly same amount of time to perform as the Sleeve Gastrectomy (approx 40 mins) and patients usually stay in hospital for less than 24 hours. We don’t notice any worse nutritional deficits than sleeve as long as patients maintain a balanced diet and take their vitamin supplements. Patients with pre-existing deficiencies generally continue to struggle with the same.

What do you know about surgical mesh?

Hernia surgeries have come a long way, and today, most of these procedures involve the use of surgical mesh.

Hernias occur because of weak tissue on the abdominal wall, and just suturing it together without reinforcement carries the risk of recurrence. Mesh increases the strength of the repair, therefore decreasing the risk of hernia recurrence!
