Questions to ask your kids now that they are back in the classroom:

Ask these during normal activities (homework, TV, reading):
• “Do words ever look blurry or move?”
• “Do your eyes hurt or feel tired?”
• “Do you get headaches, especially after reading or screens?”
• “Do you see double or need to close one eye?”
• “Is it hard to see the board / TV / signs far away?”
• “Is it hard to read small print?”
• “Do lights bother you or look too bright?”
• “Do your eyes ever feel dry, itchy, or watery?”

For younger kids, simpler phrasing helps:
• “Can you see that sign?”
• “Do your eyes feel funny?”
• “Does reading make your head hurt?”
Things to watch for (behaviour clues)

You may notice vision problems before they do:
• Squinting or covering one eye
• Sitting very close to screens or books
• Holding books very close or far away
• Frequent eye rubbing
• Losing place while reading
• Avoiding reading or homework
• Tilting head or turning face to see
• Poor hand-eye coordination (missing balls, bumping into things)

When to schedule an eye exam
• Any yes to pain, headaches, double vision, or blur
• Declining school performance or reading avoidance
• Family history of glasses, lazy eye, or eye disease
• Even with no symptoms:
o Preschool: at least once
o School age: every 1–2 years
o Teens: every 1–2 years (yearly if wearing glasses/contacts)

Yes — it’s very common to need glasses after 40, and it’s considered a normal part of aging.

Why it happens

Around age 40–45, most people develop presbyopia. This occurs when the eye’s natural lens becomes less flexible, making it harder to focus on close objects.

Common signs
• Needing to hold reading material farther away
• Difficulty reading small print
• Eye strain or headaches when reading
• Blurry vision up close (distance vision may still be fine)
• Needing brighter light to read
How common is it?
• Almost everyone develops presbyopia eventually
• It affects people regardless of whether they’ve had perfect vision before
• People who already wear glasses often need reading glasses or bifocals
• People who never needed glasses often start with reading glasses only

What kind of glasses people use
• Prescription Reading glasses
• Progressive lenses
• Computer glasses

What it doesn’t mean
• It’s not a sign your eyes are unhealthy
• It’s not preventable with exercises
• It’s not caused by screens, though screens can make symptoms more noticeable

When to see an Optometrist
• If near vision is blurry
• If you get headaches or eye strain
• If one eye seems worse than the other
• Even without symptoms, eye exams every 1–2 years after 40 are recommended

If you’d like help you figure out what type of glasses would fit your daily activities (reading, computer, phone, driving), or explain how presbyopia differs from other vision changes contact us https://freshvision.com.au/

Looking after your optical (prescription) glasses properly helps them last longer and keeps your vision clear. Here are simple, effective tips 👓

Cleaning your glasses
Rinse first: Use lukewarm water to rinse off dust and grit before wiping.
Use the right cleaner: Apply a lens-cleaning spray or a drop of mild dish soap.
Dry gently: Use a microfiber cloth. Avoid tissues, paper towels, or clothing—they can scratch lenses.
Clean regularly: Daily light cleaning prevents buildup.

What to avoid
❌ Don’t wipe dry lenses (dust can cause scratches).
❌ Avoid harsh chemicals like window cleaners, bleach, vinegar, hairspray, or alcohol unless approved for lenses.
❌ Don’t use hot water—it can damage lens coatings.
❌ Avoid placing lenses face-down on surfaces.

Proper storage
Always use a hard case when not wearing your glasses.
Keep them away from heat (car dashboards, radiators, hair dryers).
Store them with both temples folded to avoid bending.

Here are facts your optometrist wishes you knew 👁️👓:

• Dry eyes aren’t a normal part of your day.
Persistent dryness, burning, redness, or gritty sensations often indicate dry eye disease or tear imbalance. Common causes include prolonged screen use, contact lenses, aging, certain medications, and environmental factors. Left untreated, dry eyes can affect comfort, vision quality, and eye health. An eye exam can identify the cause and guide proper treatment.

• Family eye health history matters.
Many eye conditions—such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and keratoconus—can run in families. Knowing your family’s eye health history helps your optometrist assess your risk, recommend the right screening tests, and detect problems earlier, when treatment is most effective. Sharing this information can help protect your vision long term.

• Excessive screen time isn’t good for young vision.
Long periods on digital devices can contribute to eye strain, dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches in children and teens. Too much near work may also be linked to the development or progression of myopia (short-sightedness). Regular breaks, outdoor time, and routine eye exams help protect developing eyes.

Don’t Be Surprised If You Need Reading Glasses
Many adults in their late 30s and early 40s begin to experience presbyopia, a natural age-related change that makes it harder to focus up close. Reading glasses often help, but a comprehensive eye exam is the best way to identify what’s changing and determine the right solution for you.
We recommend scheduling an eye exam at age 40. Even if your vision seems fine, routine screenings can detect early signs of eye disease and help protect your long-term eye health.
