Happy World Autism Understanding Day, everyone! At Independent Audiologists Australia, we believe in promoting acceptance and understanding of individuals on the autism spectrum. As audiologists, we play an important role in the multidisciplinary team that supports children and adults with autism and their families.

Language and communication delays and difficulties are common for young children with autism, and audiologists are often involved in these early stages to determine if a child is also affected by hearing loss. We work closely with families and other healthcare providers to ensure that every child receives the best possible care and support.

We encourage our members to visit the Autism Spectrum Australia website to access valuable resources that can help them develop their own understanding of autism and create a neurodiversity-affirming approach to their clinical practice. Let's work together to create accessible and supportive autism-friendly hearing health care!

Focus on noise in National Safe Work Month.

Noise is the most common modifiable environmental cause of hearing loss among young and middle-aged adults, and the most common self-reported cause of hearing loss among men.

The World Health Organization say that exposure to loud noise adversely affects the lives of millions of people at home, at work, and in the community. If just 20% of noise-induced hearing loss was prevented among working-age individuals, $123 billion could be obtained from increased earnings, an economic impact excluding costs associated with health care, special education, and reduced quality of life.

Noise exposure guidelines vary. Four main factors contributing to differences across noise exposure guidelines are:
• exposure definitions – how exposure is measured (e.g., averaging characteristics, exchange rate, weighting scales)
• health outcomes – what health effects are covered (e.g., auditory, non-auditory, annoyance)
• target group – who is being protected (e.g., the general population, workers, children)
• allowed risk – what proportion of the target group might still develop the outcome due to differences in sensitivity to noise effects.

Some noise limits have the force of law. State and local governments may pass legislation to regulate noise exposure. Legislation may include noise level limits, zoning laws, time of day restrictions, and nuisance ordinances. In contrast, other governmental, professional, or standards organizations propose voluntary guidelines and recommendations on noise exposure limits.

Noise exposure guidelines, recommendations, and regulations need to be based on sound, ethical science and include high-quality, relevant information.

Wishing you the best of luck Dr Tegan Keogh for the 2017 SCBWN Business Woman of the Year Awards this weekend.

Meet Dr Tegan Keogh, one of our SCBWN Micro Small Business Woman of the Year finalists.

Dr Tegan Keogh (PhD) is the only female Audiologist in Queensland who has completed Doctoral Studies in Audiology (hearing) and who owns and directs her Audiology private practice, Hear Check.

Tegan has grown her clinic from absolute start-up to a busy, thriving hub at Emporio, Maroochydore, competing directly with large multi-national companies. Tegan is both a trained Paediatric and Adult specialist, providing the best advice for hearing assessments and hearing aids to her patients. Tegan influences policy and procedures within Audiology clinical practice in Queensland and Australia. She has consulted to the New Zealand Ministry of Health and Workplace Health & Safety to provide advice that informs policy and legislation. She also provides advice to schools across Queensland regarding best practice for hearing screening, auditory processing and hearing augmentation for children.

Tegan is a recognised international author of scientific publications, and continues to present at local, national and international conferences. Tegan is known for her innovative and creative approach to finding solutions within Audiology. She was the first person in Australia to develop and lead techniques allowing regional and remote newborn babies to have their hearing assessed closer to their home, via telehealth, without the need for long travel to the city. Innovation, evidence and science drive Tegan. She is currently focussed on creating world leading research, from Hear Check’s state-of-the-art premises. Under Tegan’s direction, Hear Check is developing techniques which address the inequity of distance in terms of access to hearing services, for regional and remote patients, using telehealth. Tegan collaborates with the University of Queensland on furthering projects and research and she supports Masters and PhD students, to achieve their goals, and continue their Audiology studies.

Tegan has lived on the Sunshine Coast for 19 years with her husband, two girls (Gabbi and Sophia), and an incredibly lazy black pug, named Alfie.
