✨Salon78: Trans Life and History Project✨

Trans people have been the subject of huge media, political and online attention in the last 10 years.
Much of this has been hostile, ill-informed and stereotyped.

In this session at Qtopia Sydney we will work to correct the stereotypes.

The highlight of our session is a conversation with Raewyn Connell, about her new book, published in February 2026 called Trans Lives: Social Realities Across the Globe.

The Qtopia Sydney session on 22 February also includes an outline of the coming trans history exhibition, planned for June 2027. It is guided by the exceptional skills of Sam Cooling. The panel will feature Jet Hodgson, Darby Carr and Jess Hooley.

Vale Dame Marie Bashir

The Gender Centre is deeply saddened by the passing of Dame Marie Bashir, a remarkable Australian and a tireless advocate for compassion, inclusion, and social justice.

Dame Marie Bashir served as The Gender Centre’s Ambassador from 2015 to 2019, lending her voice, leadership and unwavering support to our organisation and to the transgender and gender-diverse community we serve. Her endorsement of our work was a powerful affirmation of the importance of dignity, respect and human rights for all people.

Throughout her life, Dame Marie was widely respected for her integrity, humility and lifelong commitment to improving the wellbeing of others. As a former Governor of New South Wales, clinician, academic and advocate, she consistently championed equity, mental health, and the rights of marginalised communities.

We are profoundly grateful for the role Dame Marie played in supporting The Gender Centre and for the legacy she leaves behind. Her compassion and courage will continue to inspire our work.

Our thoughts are with her family, loved ones and all those whose lives she touched.
