VITAMINS

Q: How do I know which brand of vitamins to take?

A: With a sensible all round diet encompassing fruit, vegetables, wholegrain breads, cereals, fish, nuts, seeds, lean meat, legumes (peas, beans, lentils) and lots of water you do not need supplements. Unless old, recuperating from illness or on an inadequate diet. However, most multi-vitamin-mineral pills and capsules are good. Many have tiny amounts so cheapest is not always best.

ADENOIDS

Q: If the infants adenoids are enlarged, is it best to have them removed?

A: Only if they are causing respiratory disturbances. If infected, like the tonsils, most settle with antibiotic treatment. They shrink with age and often almost disappear. They, together with lymphoid tissue around the body, produce white cells which strengthen the body's immune system in guarding against infections. They should be left intact if possible.

BONES

Q: I had a bone density test which showed my bones are weaker than normal for my age. I was given Evista. Do I still need calcium tablets?

A: Evista, or Roloxifene, a special female hormonal compound aims to keep calcium in the bones and the heart in good condition. Take it regularly. Also increase your daily calcium intake. Small b***d fish, almonds, low fat milk and soy products help. 600mg of calcium with each meal is also re-assuring and a good investment.

CELERY

Q: I have heard celery is good for the health.

A: Historically it has been used for centuries to relieve arthritis. Eating an 18cm raw stick can work wonders. A patient who does this walks well, without it, he is crippled with pain! I have seen it. Celery seeds and juice are drug free and often helpful. Some like it cooked as it is much more tender. Others chop it up, stir in flour and water, add a bit of nutmeg and serve with toast. It is appetising and full of goodness!

HEEL SPUR

Q: I suffered a heel spur, and bought a device overseas with firm rods sticking out to massage the heel. Presto, the pain quickly vanished.

A: Any stimulation to the muscles and tendons in the heel may help, whether by deep massage, stretching, hot and cold soakings, ultrasound, physiotherapy, injections with xylocaine and hydrocortisone, acupuncture, or heel insoles. Manipulative physiotherapy or remedial physio with pressure points help others.

VISION

Q: My vision is deteriorating, and the doctor says it is permanent and irreversible.

A: This is macular degeneration, aggravated by smoking, directly or the passive smoke of those nearby. Avoid this at all costs. There is no cure. It is aggravated by advancing years, lack of vitamin C and possibly diabetes. Risk is inherited, and we will have the answer in a few years time. Various new treatments have been tried with varying success. Eye hygiene and artificial tears will help what vision is left.

BAD BACK

Q: My 16 year old daughter has a bad back.

A: 90% will similarly suffer, it is only a matter of time. Alternate hot and cold showers for 10 minutes 2-3 times a day, then rubbing with a brisk towel is the starting point. Take pain killing analgesics. Massage with a heat producing cream. There are many available. Deep massage reduces muscle spasm, which in turn increases circulation, fresh oxygen, food and vitamins. This fixes many. But manipulative physiotherapy, muscle-tendon stretching, rhizolysis, and acupuncture assist others. Occasionally x-rays or MRI are required if pain persists.

BUILDING UP THE SYSTEM

Q: My doctor says my immune system is run down, and needs to be built up. But how?

A: This system protects the body against unwanted invaders, and is composed of many complex parts. In general, you can help yourself with sensible living. Adequate rest, exercise, relaxation, freedom from stress are important and are up to you. Plenty of fresh water, less alcohol and no smoking are vital. So is good nutrition. Each day eat high fibre, low fat, high vitamin-mineral natural foods. Fruit, vegetables, legumes (peas, beans and lentils), lean meats, seeds, herbs, low fat milk and soy products, eggs, fish, nuts are on the list.

SWALLOWING

Q: I am finding it increasingly difficult to swallow bread and sandwiches which get stuck in my chest somewhere.

A: Go see your doctor at once for a prompt endoscopic examination. This may indicate narrowing of the lower part of the food tube, and is an early sign of ulceration or cancer. If present this must be treated aggressively and immediately.

BAD BREATH

Q: Is there a simple remedy for fixing bad breath?

A: Start with a dental check. Plaque, caries, rotting food in hidden crevices head the list of fixable causes. Smoking is probably the worst single cause. Then a check of the sinuses, airways, chest and tum come next. Gut upsets often re-cycle unpleasant gasses via the lungs. Chew up parsley, probably the best natural breath sweetener around. Try it and see.
