🇦🇺🚒 Bushfires can create their own weather, generating ‘pyrocumulonimbus’ clouds and storms. 🔥🌩️
These clouds can cause dangerous and unpredictable changes in fire behaviour, making the fire more difficult and hazardous to fight.

So, how do they form?

1. A plume of hot, turbulent air and smoke rises.
2. Turbulence mixes cooler air into the plume, causing it to broaden and cool as it rises.
3. When the plume rises high enough, low atmospheric pressure causes its air to cool and cloud to form.
4. In an unstable atmosphere a thunderstorm can develop: pyrocumulonimbus cloud.
5. Rain in the cloud evaporates and cools when it comes into contact with dry air, producing a downburst.
6. Lightning may be produced and can ignite new fires.

Find out more, including how our scientists are working to be able to predict them, in our blog: http://ow.ly/3t1i50x8nM6

FIRE PERMITS REQUIRED FROM THE 1ST OF OCTOBER

From this Wednesday the 1st of October 2025 we will see the Bush Fire Danger Period come into effect. Fire permits will be required in our area until the 31st of March 2026.

What you need to know:

- You are required to give at least 24hrs notice to your neighbours and the NSW RFS before lighting your burn.

- The permit holder must be present and have the permit on their person at the fire until it is fully extinguished.

- Permit holders must follow all the conditions outlined in the permit, keeping in mind permits may be varied, suspended or cancelled depending on conditions, and are automatically suspended on high fire risk and Total Fire Ban.

- Notify us of your planned burn – www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify

Be prepared and follow the rules to help prevent bushfires this season.

Last night Group 3 Brigade members, family & special guests came together to Celebrate the 30 Years Darryl Jordan has served as Group 3 Deputy Captain in the Lower Hunter.
An enjoyable night was had by all in attendance in recognition of this amazing achievement by Darryl. 🏆
Darryl enjoyed the night catching up with mates & past & present members.
In 1994 Darryl Jordan attended a fire at Raglan. Ted Murrell was the Fire Control Officer at the time and he made Darryl along with Peter Williams, Fire Bosses.
Alan Delany was the Group Capain at the time. By the end of 1994 FCO Murrell said he would make both the men Deputy Group Captains. On the 17th February 1995 these positions became official. Darryl became Deputy Group West. Back then you could take the role of Captain and Group Captain, and Darryl held both positions for a short time.
Darryl has been & remains in this volunteer role as Deputy Group Officer now for 30 years.

🌟 Congratulations Darryl & thanks again for your commitment, time & dedication in this role.
