Confessions of a yoga teacher:

The pose I hate the most is…

This might surprise you, but I have concrete hips! So I find poses that either open my hips or keep them square REALLY challenging!

People assume because I am a yoga teacher I’m super flexible and it’s just not true. It’s thanks to my yoga practise though that I’m not completely stiff as a board 🀣

Why did I film this? To show you that you don’t need to be bendy to do yoga, you just have to find a way to modify your poses to work for YOUR body.

All body’s are welcome at Sowa, including concrete ones like mine 🀣

If your half splits pose (Ardha Hanumanasana) looks a bit like this…

πŸ’‘TIP: Put blocks under your hands!

This raises the earth, allowing you to reach the β€˜floor’ so you can press your hands down. This will allow you to-

πŸ–οΈ Slide the extended leg forward more, helping you to stack your hips on top of the knee
πŸ–οΈ Press down- this will help you lift your sitting bones up, which might help you drop the chest some more to deepen the forward fold aspect of the pose
πŸ–οΈ Press down - this will help you lift up and peel back the hip of the extended leg, stopping them wonky hips!

As always, this is not about perfecting the pose, it’s about finding a way to move into it that supports YOUR body.

What is restorative yoga and why it matters…

RESTORATIVE
Passive poses using props to help the body relax, switching your sympathetic nervous system off (fight-or-flight), and your parasympathetic nervous system on (rest-and-digest)

WHY WE NEED IT
The sympathetic nervous system is amazing- it floods the body with chemicals we need to get through the day. But it was never designed to be on ALL the time.
Imagine driving your car with your foot to the floor on the gas pedal and never hitting the breaks- you would run out of petrol and the car would break. Same same!

WHY REST IN STUDIO?
Because resting at home for most of us sucks!
Home is FULL of distractions and to-do list items. You would NEVER get an hour to yourself-not even your cat would let you!
Rest in the studio guarantees you an hour to yourself- your nervous system needs that long to get the message!

WHAT DO YOU NEED?
Nothing! All props are provided.
You need comfy clothes and an hour. That’s it.
I guide you through the poses, the lights are dimmed, the air is cooled, the music is soft and you can absolutely go to sleep if you want to!

WHEN ARE REST CLASSES ON?

MONDAY 7pm Restorative
FRIDAY 5.45pm Restorative
SUNDAY 4pm Slow flow & rest

Don’t have time? Make time to rest before you are forced to through injury or exhaustion!!
