About me

Hi, I'm Adriahn :)

I'm a Remedial Massage Therapist with 12 years experience, working from my home studio in Maylands.

I'm also a qualified yoga teacher and support worker.
My work is offering services to help people.

For some, that's helping with healing an injury:
-Reducing Pain
-Improving Strength
-Increasing Range of Movement

For some, it's general therapeutic maintenance:
-Improving posture
-Getting the whole body moving and functioning better
-Increasing body awareness
-Getting back into exercise

For some, it's creating a space to feel supported, safe, nurtured, cared for. Letting go to the stresses of daily life, nourishing the body, resting, recharging, whilst being worked on by a skilled and intuitive practitioner.

Life has been busy this last 6 months and most of my free time has been booked up with my regular clients.

Starting next week I will have a bit more free time to offer massage sessions!

I'm wanting to help people that are experiencing muscular pain, tension or general stress in their daily lives ... who are wanting to prioritise their health and wellness and feel better and more functional in their day to day lives.

Optimising shoulder movement:

(Tl;dr: if you have shoulder pain or weakness - book in a session - i can help with that 😀)

The Shoulder is not just one joint. Its made up of multiple joints that are *supposed* to move together smoothly and in a certain pattern.

A simplified approach is to look at the ball and socket joint (glenohumeral) and the movement of the scapula.

As you bring your arm overhead, I look at how the scapula is moving:

-it is stuck (not doing enough movement)?
-is it moving too much?
-does it 'wing' out to the side
-is there 'shakiness' or weakness in any part of that range?

Depening on what is observed, i can apply a variety of techniques to reduce pain, optimise movement and increase strength by:

*releasing tight muscles
*getting more activation of the muscles that are not working enough
*reducing activation of the muscles that are overworking

Muscles that i treat for this can include:

Above:
Upper trapezius
Levator scapula
Supraspinatus
Scalenes

On the outside:
Infraspinatus
Teres major and minor
Deltoid
Latissimus dorsi

On the inside:
Rhomboids
Middle and lower trapezius

Front:
Pectoralis major
Pectoralis minor
Subscapularis
Intercostals

If you want to read into it more: look up the phrase 'scapulohumeral rhythm' that's the offical term for this movement pattern.

***and please note - my approach to massage and bodywork is working holistically, treating the whole body and working with the nervous system to be an enjoyable experience - i'm just writing this to explain (in a massively oversimplified way) a bit of the science behind it

- the room is heated
- there are lots of towels and pillows for your comfort
- optional fluffy blankets as well
- totally ok to keep your clothes on through the session
* recommended to wear soft/loose clothes to get the most out of your session

What is involved in a Remedial Massage session?

First we have a chat about what is affecting you and what you are hoping to get out of a session.
Do you have any injuries or medical conditions?
Are there any areas causing pain?
What do you do for work / exercise / social activities?
Are you wanting more work on a specific issue or more ‘general maintenance’?

Sessions will normally start face down on the table,
we will work over the whole body without oil,
testing range of movement of all the joints,
applying stretches,
mobilising joints and muscle tissue,
releasing any areas with tight fascia,
applying muscle activation techniques,

Then optional dry needling to any stubborn or painful areas,

Then applying oil, either to specific areas for deep tissue work, or general for more flowy relaxation techniques.

Sessions can be 60 minutes or 90 minutes.
60 minutes is recommended if you only have a few areas needing attention,
90 minutes is recommended if you would like the whole body worked over with oil, or if you have multiple ares needing attention.

Upon closing the session we can have a chat about what we found out about the body- if there are areas needing more stretching or strengthening. We can recommend stretches or exercises and create a treatment plan going forward if multiple sessions are needed.
