Community-first care starts with people

Dr Manmit Madan’s journey from arriving in Australia 25 years ago to building two thriving Sydney medical centres is grounded in one belief “serve the community, help people and keep on learning”.

Beyond patient care, Dr Madan supports newly arrived migrants, mentors future doctors, and invests in health education. This is also a story about partnership. From an early conversation with a local NAB branch manager that helped him take his first step into property, to ongoing support with tailored banking and finance solutions through NAB Health and Medfin, he’s expanded his practices.

Behind the scenes, practical tools matter too. With the help of simple, integrated systems like HICAPS and Best Practice, his team can spend less time on admin and more time on patient care.

Smart changes. Big impact.

In 2026, practices across the country are rethinking the small things that can make a big difference to staff confidence and patient care.

Today, we’re spotlighting Lance Schaffer, Managing Director at Options Optometrists, who’s focused on removing everyday friction to create better experiences for both staff and patients.

Improving care across Options Optometrists with practical changes

“I notice that some of the most meaningful improvements come from paying attention to the small things that create friction over time.

Like many growing practices, I noticed the same issue popping up again and again. Pricing and product information lived in multiple places; printed lists went out of date and updates took time to reach everyone. Staff found themselves double-checking details while patients waited.

On its own, none of this felt significant. But across multiple practices and hundreds of consultations each week, the inefficiencies added up and it became clear a better, more consistent approach was needed.

The solution was simple and practical: one central source of truth accessible on tablets. Current, identical and instantly accessible information for every team member, in every practice, at any time. Product specifications and supporting information are now maintained in one place, optimised and managed centrally.
The impact has been felt quickly. The tablets have created a more modern look and give staff the confidence that what they’re sharing is accurate and up-to-date.
Staff spend less time searching for answers and more time focused on patients. Conversations flow more naturally. Team members moving between practices feel confident because everything works the same way, everywhere.

For patients, it means clearer explanations, consistent pricing and a smoother, more contemporary experience.

The change wasn’t about introducing technology for its own sake. It came from listening to people on the ground and wanting to support them with systems that make their work easier while improving the experience for every patient who walks through the door.

Often, the most meaningful improvements start by noticing the small things.”

“In 2026, we’re continuing the same direction that has moved our business forward this year - improving the patient experience across every touch point by using AI to enable efficiencies in our day-to-day operations. Progress in this space has made it possible for us to build our own internal tools rapidly and to iterate until we have found the best solution with real impacts across every aspect of our business.

We’ve already cut down a huge amount of admin that used to sit on the shoulders of our team, which has given them more time to actually focus on patients rather than paperwork. Patients with straightforward needs can now check themselves in, which frees our reception team to properly support those who need extra care and follow-up. What used to involve jumping between several systems, billing, notes, and reports can now be handled in minutes instead of hours.

The goal for 2026 is simply to build on this foundation. Patients will move through their appointments faster, walk out with clearer information, and have more control through simple self-help tools. Our team will be able to focus on higher-value work instead of repetitive tasks, which not only improves the service we provide but also gives our staff more room to grow. At the end of the day, the real outcome is better care without higher costs and that’s what matters to us.”
