A new review published on PubMed, highlighting the importance of Iron, just in time for Autoimmune Awareness Month!

Did you know iron is essential for healthy immune function? It helps to support immune cell activity, regulate inflammation, and help the body maintain immune tolerance, all critical in autoimmune conditions. It also plays a key role in antioxidant defence (protecting cells from oxidative stress) which can exacerbate inflammation and tissue damage.

From a naturopathic perspective, supporting iron involves a lot more than just intake. Treatment will also often include optimising iron absorption, improving gut health, managing inflammation, and supporting immune balance.

If you’d like to check in on your iron status and immune markers, and explore what optimal levels look like for your body, you can book a consultation through my website. I’d love to meet you!

March is Autoimmune Awareness Month 🤍

Autoimmune conditions can be incredibly challenging and debilitating, often taking years to reach a diagnosis. Many of these conditions are ‘invisible’ to others, so the daily struggles may go unseen, even though they impact quality of life profoundly.

This post aims to bring awareness to the fact that Autoimmune conditions are complex and multi-systemic, affecting different organs and systems depending on the condition. Because their presentation can vary so widely, care should be personalised, focusing on supporting the body holistically and addressing the underlying mechanisms, not just the symptoms.

If you would be interested in getting some support for your autoimmune condition, I’d love to meet you.

Why I love Quercetin for Hayfever 🤧

Conventional antihistamines mainly block histamine receptors, so they reduce sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. This relieves symptoms quickly, but it doesn’t address why histamine is being overproduced. In other words, it’s masking symptoms rather than fixing the underlying cause.

Quercetin, on the other hand, works upstream by stabilising mast cells and modulating the immune system, so it can reduce histamine release and support a more balanced immune response long-term. You’re not just covering up symptoms, you’re helping the body react less aggressively to triggers over time.

If you have been experiencing severe hayfever and are interested in investigating the root cause, I’d love to help you!

How to Support Your Thyroid!

Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid, slowing hormone production and leaving you exhausted. Medications (like thyroxine or liothyronine) replace hormones, but they don’t address the root cause. This is where diet, lifestyle, and targeted nutrients come in, helping fuel your thyroid, support hormone production, & manage immune activity naturally.

Some key dietary nutrients to focus on include:
* Zinc
* Selenium
* Iodine
* Iron
* Omega-3s

Overall, the goal here is just to highlight that diet & lifestyle are a crucial part of addressing & supporting root causes, and can really improve thyroid management long term.
