𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘂𝗺-𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀

As we head towards the holiday season, we thought it was timely to promote this Easy Read book about Lithium-ion batteries.🔋

The book has lots of important information, such as:
• how to stay safe (e.g. don’t charge devices on blankets, pillows or couches) 👍
• how to know if a battery or product is damaged 🪫
• how to get rid of lithium-ion batteries 🚮
• what to do in an emergency. 🚨

We produced this Easy Read with AFAC News (the National Council for Fire and Emergency Services in Australia and New Zealand).

We worked together to create tailored versions of the document for 6 fire and emergency services across Australia.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆!

But wouldn’t it be great if every day was jargon free? Plain language supports people with low English literacy to access information. But let’s face it, everyone benefits from simple, clear communications.

Plain language removes barriers in society. It also empowers people to make informed decisions about everything from health to hobbies.

At Easy Read Australia, we create documents that people can easily understand. That involves:
• dropping the jargon
• focusing on key information
• getting straight to the point
• being direct
• giving examples
• explaining steps clearly
• including a call to action (e.g. deadlines or ways to find more information).

𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼-𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗴𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱

At this year’s COSP18 in New York, Australia was represented by 11 people with disability who shared their experiences and priorities on a global stage.

At the event, they also explored the value of disability-led and co-designed research.

Easy Read is an important part of any research or consultation process that involves people with low literacy, including people with disability and people with multicultural backgrounds. Afterall, people need to understand the topic before they can give meaningful feedback.

Easy Read can help people understand a research project and what’s expected of them if they choose to get involved. You can also develop surveys, meeting agendas and other support materials in Easy Read.

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗔𝗜𝗗𝗢𝗖 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸

NAIDOC Week 2025 marks 50 years of celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and achievements.

This year’s theme is ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy’.

NAIDOC started as a movement for recognition and rights, led by Indigenous communities seeking justice and equity.

At Easy Read Australia, we advocate for accessible information as a human right. We are proud to have worked with the Department of Social Services and Services Australia to produce Easy Read resources for Indigenous communities. These resources have helped people understand important information that affects their daily lives.

Easy Read isn't only for people with disabilities, it also helps Indigenous peoples, people from multicultural backgrounds and older Australians.

It can be hard for people with low English literacy and disability to find information they need on websites.

There are lots of things you can do to help people find your Easy Read documents. For example:

👩‍💻Create a dedicated webpage that has all your Easy Read resources in one place. Include an explanation of what Easy Read is and who it’s for. Whether you are writing 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 or just trying to make your information easier for more people to read and understand, here are some 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 💡

Use 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 and 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 to help readers understand key messages.

Include lots of 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 and use 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 to break up the text.

Make sure your text and images have 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁 for people with low vision.

Use clear 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 and focus on ‘𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄’ 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

We enjoyed working with Michelle Ou from (CFID) to produce an information and consent form. The research is being conducted by CFID, and (for the ) to understand how best to engage with when doing projects. The aim is develop good practice guidelines for future research. This document was also to ensure it meets the needs of people with . If you know anyone who may want to be involved, contact Centre for Inclusive Design as soon as possible. Participants will be paid for their time.

This story by Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) highlights the importance of planning for fire emergencies, particularly for people living with disability. Congratulations to the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Fire Rescue Victoria for creating the Prevent Detect Escape course for at-risk members of the community.
