Calf strains are common and occur in a variety of sports, especially running, tennis and soccer. POC diagnostic ultrasound offers a fast, efficient and cheap way to diagnose and grade gastrocnemius strains. Managed with appropriate graded rehabilitation and a return to running protocol, we utilize evidence-based strategies to help athletes recover smarter, return safer and employ preventative strategies to mitigate the risk of re-injury.

Not all protein packs the same punch 💥. Quality matters—especially when it comes to essential amino acids, muscle growth and recovery. Whether you're plant-powered or omnivore, smart choices = stronger gains. Remember that 1.6g per kg of protein is still the recommendation for athletic performance and the window for protein intake post resistance training is very wide - 12-24hrs wide.

Hip labral tears are an under-recognized issue in grappling sports like BJJ—despite no published studies, they’re clinically real and linked to deep flexion, adduction and internal rotation loading. Positions like closed guard and leg entanglements can stress the labrum, especially in athletes with FAI or hip dysplasia. Early assessment, targeted mobility work, and pelvic stability training are key to staying on the mats.

Why Recovery Matters:

Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) triggers soft-tissue inflammation, swelling, and elevated biomarkers like creatine kinase (CK) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). This leads to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), increased perceived effort, and reduced performance.

Recovery strategies limit muscle damage, inflammation, DOMS, and fatigue, helping athletes feel less sore, reduce injury risk, and adapt better to training.

We cover recovery strategies and the data behind them in more detail in our book on injury prevention in tennis.

New insights into Achilles Tendinopathy (AT) are reshaping how we treat it. Midportion AT is common—but now we know the Gastrocnemius Lateralis (GL) subtendon is the weak link. Future research is now needed to understand how we can target the GL in rehabilitation to further improve patient outcomes with AT.

We didn't have the space to cover this in our book on injury prevention in tennis, although we are often asked about infrared sauna therapy. The general trend in the research suggests infrared saunas may be of benefit for recovery post-exercise.

Many patients are referred for imaging that is often unnecessary or irrelevant—adding significant cost and delay for both the patient and the healthcare system. This case clearly demonstrated how point-of-care diagnostic ultrasound can streamline care and deliver faster, more targeted outcomes. 🎿
