Did you know that two thirds of children and adolescents with ADHD will continue to experience symptoms into adulthood? Whilst previously it was believed that children outgrow ADHD, we now know this is not the case, making effective interventions for teenagers all the more important. Check out last nights episode of Insight on SBS for some great insights into what it is like as an adult with ADHD.

A recent study by the Murdoch Children's Research Institute revealed that ADHD has a total financial cost of approximately $12 billion as a result of healthcare costs, loss of productivity, education costs and justice system costs.

These costs highlight the need for effective interventions for those with ADHD both to improve quality of life and social and educational outcomes, and to reduce the economic burden on the community.

Monash University are investigating social skills in teenagers with attention difficulties and are currently recruiting teenagers aged 13-18 years who have a diagnosis of ADHD. The results of this study will help develop our understanding of how different cognitive skills such as attention and impulse control contribute to social difficulties. This research will be used to inform the development of targeted interventions to help improve social skills in children and teenagers with ADHD.
If you would like more information about the study check out the flyer below, or email erin.mckay@monash.edu. Please feel free to share this post with any other parents or groups you know who might be interested. Reimbursement of $20 (Coles giftcard) will be provided and teenagers will receive their choice of entertainment voucher (cinema/xBox/iTunes)

The recently released "ADHD Australia National Survey Report: the voice of the ADHD community" offers some valuable insights into how we as a community can best support the needs of people living with ADHD.

ADHD state;
"The Survey was designed to establish community need and priority in the areas of overall challenges and gaps for the ADHD community, carers, school, finding the right medications and therapies, managing ADHD, adults with ADHD.

Among many priorities, three key areas of concern stood out in The Survey results.

These are:

- The cost of life of living with ADHD.
- The need for schools to truly accommodate, empathise with and understand children with ADHD, to help them meet the unique challenges they face.
- The need for awareness and understanding of the challenges people at all ages with ADHD face in day-to-day aspects of work, social and family life.

It is our hope that the information brought to light through The Survey will be of continual benefit to the ADHD community, by highlighting the need for greater support, research, acceptance and understanding from the general public, parents and teachers, the healthcare professional community, and the Australian Government."
