This 2021 study of nearly 600 typically developing children aged between 2-10 years indicates speech intelligibility is developing much later than previous studies have suggested.

These new norms are based on decontextualised intelligibility by unfamiliar listeners, meaning the listeners had no context behind what the child had said.

Older norms are based on contextualised intelligibility by the child’s parent/ guardian.

It would be great to see norms to represent the neurodiverse population too!

If you’ve met one autistic person, you’ve met one autistic person.

♾ The Autism spectrum is as unique as each autistic person
♾ Autistic people have their own individual strengths, interests, sensory preferences, learning styles and social differences.
♾ At we embrace these strengths and differences to provide person centred, individualised support.
♾ we acknowledge terms like high and low functioning are outdated and harmful
♾ We strive to be as neuro affirming as we can but acknowledge we are not perfect and will continue to learn from autistic individuals and advocates to make changes to our practise.

Happy Easter to all those who celebrate!

Easter is an EGGcellent opportunity to support the development of your child’s language!

🥚 Going on egg hunts supports modelling and understanding of prepositions such as in, on, under, over, next to.
🗣Get your child to tell you where they found their eggs to support their oral narrative skills.
✏️writing clues for egg hunts can enhance phonological awareness and literacy skills
🍫 whilst eating your yummy eggs, describe the size, colours, shapes and taste of the chocolate.
🐣 Easter is a great time to discuss life cycles and model time concepts such as before, during and after.
✝️ You can discuss what this weekend symbolises for Christians to help them understand the link between events and celebrations.
🍂 Easter is a time to discuss seasons and how we can link events to times during the year. For us in Australia, it’s autumn but for my family in the UK it’s spring.
✂️ Easter crafts are a great way of supporting sequencing skills and time concepts such as first/ next/ then as well as following auditory instructions
📱For AAC users, use a total communication approach: provide objects to chose from, support verbal words with key word sign or written choices, have their core board or device with them at all times!

Communication 🗣👌👩‍💻📝📱

Everyone has the right to communicate, it’s a basic, fundamental human right!

As part of my role as a Speech Pathologist, I support and am guided by my clients to find a functional communication system which is as individual as they are.

Not everyone will use speech as their main modality but this does not mean they are not fantastic, successful and motivated communicators.

Everyday we all use many ways to communicate. This may look like:

🗣 speech, sounds, humming, screaming, crying, laughing
📱 Augmentative and Alternative communication Systems (AAC) such as communication devices
🗒communication boards
☝️pointing
👁 eye gaze or looking
✍️ writing
👌 key word sign or sign language
👩‍💻emails, typing, social media
📸 photo or pictures in books
😄facial expressions
♥️Emojis
🤷‍♀️body language
