What is the magic that has preserved our passion to maintain our Jewish identity throughout our long and troubled history? Whatever it is, I am pretty sure that Kosher food plays a prominent part in that miracle. Of all the commandments God has given us, Kosher it seems, is the only one that so well conceals its spiritual power in a most pedestrian disguise. [ 293 more words ]

Many of us, have enjoyed the pleasure of visiting Yerushlayim. It is a beautiful city, and many claim its holiness is palpable. It is a tourist destination, and a place for introspection, for seeking peace, holiness and spiritual energy. We visit the Wailing Wall, by popular demand no longer known by that sad moniker - it is universally known as 'The Kotel' - often pretty much ignoring its message of sadness, despair and loneliness. Without formal training and only some life experience, I would offer a modified perspective of the conclusions made by Dunning and Kruger, described below. I suspect that when modesty is inculcated and penetrates to the core of one's being, it dramatically alters one's identity and abilities. Chazal describe the conflict of Humanity and HKBH's solution in the order of Creation. When we are modest, when our perspective is balanced, we are informed - the entire universe was created, meaning prepared, for you because you are the purpose of Creation, you are the focus of HKBH's attention; when however our perception is distorted, we are told, even the insect was created before you. "In spite of Gd's best efforts to help you appreciate what He has given you, it was not until today, when you feared losing it, that you began to appreciate it" - What happened that made us feel we might be losing this great gift that Gd has given us? It was the day, not much before Moshe Rabbenu was to depart this side of the universe, when he presented the written scroll of the Torah to his family, the tribe of Levi. [ 285 more words ]

The Torah commands, perhaps advocates, capital punishment. When capital punishment is applied, the co**se, in some circumstances, must be hanged in public. However, it is prohibited to leave the co**se hanging overnight. Burial is required on the day of ex*****on. Beis Din would hang the co**se for only a moment, before immediately burying it. The Torah explains why it may not remain hanging - … [ 288 more words ]

You are to exercise no mercy, feel no pity and not hearken to their pleas - but they must be executed by your own hand The Torah instructs that various transgressions carry the death penalty. At the same time, our Sages OBM explain that a Beis Din that applies this penalty too often, more than once in 7 years or some say 70 years, is acting improperly. [ 286 more words ]

You must be exceedingly careful to protect your souls, by keeping in mind that when you stood at Mount Sinai and heard Gd speak to you, you were as close to Gd as you could possibly get, yet you saw no image or shape. Throughout our history, even where various images appear, usually representing Moshe Rabbenu and Aharon HaCohen, be it in artwork or as decorative additions to the frontispiece of many Sefarim, these images have not become famous, they have not served as focal points about which we rally or become icons of identification.
