Around 50 South Australians are admitted to public hospitals every day due to injuries from falls. They stay an average of seven days per admission.
With more than 21,000 fall related hospitalisations each year, Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) warns the state is facing a preventable crisis that is placing unsustainable pressure on hospitals, ambulance services and the broader health budget.
This state election, ESSA is calling on all candidates and parties to commit to stronger investment in falls prevention programs and the specialist workforce, including Accredited Exercise Physiologists, needed to prevent and manage these injuries.
“South Australia is experiencing a falls tsunami, and it is flooding our health system,” said ESSA Interim CEO and Accredited Exercise Physiologist Katie Lyndon.
