About Me

REGISTERED MUSIC THERAPIST, PHD CANDIDATE

Rita Messak

I am highly qualified and professional music therapist with a high level of experience and a zest for sharing passion for all things musical, i hold a strong belief that music can change lives for the better. Music Therapy provides access to exceptional musical experiences for people of all ages and abilities. I am a gentle and creative practitioner, dedicated to helping people find joy, ease and strength during difficult times. I use music as my main tool to prompt conversation, help you connect with and express thoughts and emotions, and create experiences of ease and joy. Once we determine your goals for the session, you'll be supported to explore and process through listening to and discussing music, singing, playing instruments, songwriting, developing playlists, or music and imagery experiences. We'll reflect on what comes up through these experiences, and work together to integrate your experiences to support your daily life. Registration

Rita Messak RMT contributed to a wonderful piece by SBS Arabic in Melbourne, all about how music therapy can support people living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, especially those who speak English as a second language.

"In these cases, using familiar Arabic songs in therapy sessions can provide comfort, connection, emotional support and many other benefits," said Rita.

Thanks to Rita, her participant Michael Ritchi, journalist Fares Zakhour and Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Australia for highlighting the evidence-based nature of music therapy and its capacity to improve lives.

✨IMPORTANT NEWS✨

On Wednesday, the NDIA released the long awaited review into music and art therapy.

The review was led by experienced health economist Dr Stephen Duckett AM and shaped by input from more than 600 people in the disability community. This included people who access art and music therapy supports, as well as service providers.

The review found that ‘art and music therapies can be life changing for some people with disabilities’.

🛑 Media release: AMTA welcomes recognition of music therapy under NDIS but raises concern over price cuts

The Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) welcomes the report of the Independent Review of NDIS Funded Music and Art Supports led by Dr Stephen Duckett AM, which:

- reaffirms music therapy as a recognised therapeutic support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
- confirms that only AMTA-registered music therapists are eligible to deliver music therapy.

This recognition aligns music therapy with other allied health professions such as speech pathology and dietetics, underscoring the profession’s standards and clinical expertise.

However, AMTA is deeply concerned by the pricing cuts announced by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) upon publication of Dr Duckett’s report.

Music therapy is a powerful evidence-based therapy that can change lives.
Three days ago, we recorded a television segment highlighting the evidence-based nature of music therapy, its transformative power, and its capacity to improve lives. The discussion included research evidence, a case study of transformation, and the role of music therapy in supporting individuals with mental health conditions. We also explored the unique benefits of Oriental music—both for people from Middle Eastern backgrounds and for those with a wider interest in this musical tradition.

The segment further highlighted the 50-year celebrations of the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA), acknowledging the expertise of highly skilled Registered Music Therapists (RMTs), and recognising the ongoing advocacy and efforts of AMTA in advancing the profession.
