MGUS, or monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, is a non-cancerous condition where a small number of abnormal cells in your bone marrow (the spongy centre of our bones) produces an abnormal protein that is detectable in the bloodstream. This abnormal protein is called paraprotein or M protein.

Each year, about 1% (1 in 100) people with MGUS will slowly progress to develop myeloma, or another serious condition such as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), non-Hodgkin lymphoma, or AL amyloidosis.

Learn more about MGUS, how it’s diagnosed and how it’s managed in our new ‘Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance’ Health condition infosheet:https://myeloma.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/MGUS-Conditions-infosheet.pdf

The journey to transplant and recovery- by Alan McIntosh, QLD

'Then three weeks began in one of the hospital's semi-isolated rooms, while my body rebuilt its immune system. The stem cells rebuild white cells by making their way to the bone marrow, where they settle and develop into new blood cells (this process is known as engraftment). Your white blood cells are monitored through a daily blood test. I felt like a newborn – hairless, vulnerable, with no immunity even to a common cold. Three weeks of boredom, and for some, you then get to go home. But for me that wasn’t what happened...'

For too long, myeloma has remained under recognised and under prioritised. In an effort to bring attention to just how complex and costly myeloma is to those living with myeloma, the economy and the health system, we have worked with HTAnalysts to develop an Economic Impact of Myeloma in Australia report.

We will be launching the report at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday 25 March 2026 at 8:15am and we invite you to join us.

If you are able to attend the event in Canberra, we also warmly encourage you to join us in person. Your presence sends a powerful message: that the myeloma community is united, engaged, and determined to see change.
