The journey to transplant and recovery- by Alan McIntosh, QLD

'Then three weeks began in one of the hospital's semi-isolated rooms, while my body rebuilt its immune system. The stem cells rebuild white cells by making their way to the bone marrow, where they settle and develop into new blood cells (this process is known as engraftment). Your white blood cells are monitored through a daily blood test. I felt like a newborn – hairless, vulnerable, with no immunity even to a common cold. Three weeks of boredom, and for some, you then get to go home. But for me that wasn’t what happened...'

Our Regional Nurse Link program remains at the heart of our work, and we love being able to showcase the dedicated nurses who make this program so valuable to the regional myeloma community. This month, we are proud to feature Chloe Fietz, our regional link nurse from Mt Isa.

"My name is Chloe, and I have worked in oncology for the past six years. I recently joined the Myeloma Nurse Link program, which provides me with access to valuable resources, enabling me to deliver more informed and comprehensive care to patients diagnosed with myeloma working within a rural and remote health service. I am passionate about bridging gaps in care and ensuring my patients have access to high-quality support. Being able to enhance the level of care I provide to my patients, particularly in a setting where resources are limited, is both professionally fulfilling and deeply rewarding".

Two days to go! Your voice could bring a life-changing myeloma treatment closer to approval.

A promising new treatment for myeloma is under review for funding through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and your personal story can make a critical difference in their approval.

Teclistamab is a type of immunotherapy called a bispecific antibody. It works by recognising and binding to proteins on two different types of cells and then bringing the cells together. It is given as an injection into the skin (subcutaneously) once per week after the initial phase where the dose is gradually increased over a period.

The PBAC will be reviewing an application for funding for teclistamab in the treatment of people living with myeloma who have had three prior lines of therapy.

You can add your experience of living with or caring for someone with myeloma by completing the online form on the PBAC’s website [ https://ohta-consultations.health.gov.au/ohta/pbac-march-2026/ ] by Wednesday 21 January 2026

Myeloma didn't stop my game- by Lynne Hayhow, NT

'My husband, Wayne and I had moved to Darwin 14 years ago. Living in remote Australia worked for me as I didn’t feel lost in the system. My team were happy with my progress regarding my RCC but through routine blood tests in January 2024 and scans a small lytic lesion was found on my lower spine, this confirmed myeloma and so my journey began.

I am an avid lawn bowler and the encouragement from my club, and the state, meant I was still able to compete regularly and try out to represent Northern Territory (NT) in a national lawn bowls event.'
