Last week, we held a photo shoot with two of our tenants in apartments within the same building. The homes are only a floor apart, but what stood out was how differently each space is used — shaped entirely by the person who lives there.

For Jamie, that means using his custom training bike to stay fit and prepare for long-haul rides. For Melinda, it’s reading on the balcony, working from her office or sitting at her desk to draw and paint.

And that’s really what SDA is about: creating homes that support independence, reflect how people actually live, and making space for choice, individuality and the things they love.

Some behind-the-scenes moments from a photo shoot earlier this week with two of our tenants. We loved spending the morning with Mel and Jamie in their homes, seeing how they live their lives, their way.

2026 has started off with a bang and we're excited to be opening the doors to some of our beautiful SDA homes.

While web pictures and brochures are great and 3D images provide extra insight, there's nothing quite like walking through a home to understand if it's the right fit.

During out open homes, we always have staff on hand to answer questions about the property, talk you through what the SDA journey with Guardian Living looks like, and answer any burning questions you may have about SDA.

We know that set days/times don't always work for everyone, so if there is a Guardian Living property that piques your interest, please reach out the team, and we can coordinate a private tour.

In our final team meeting last year, we played a game of ‘Guardian Living Bingo’, that brought about lots of robust discussions about disability, SDA and so much more.

One of the areas we explored was the social model of disability. That is the model of disability that recognises that people are disabled not by their impairment, but by the barriers created by society. It shifts the focus away from “fixing” the individual and instead looks at how environments, systems and attitudes can exclude people. By removing physical, social and structural barriers, the social model supports greater inclusion, choice and participation for everyone.

SDA reflects this approach by focusing on the design of housing — creating environments that reduce barriers rather than placing limits on people. When SDA is done well, it enables independence, safety and choice by ensuring homes work for the people who live in them.

If you are new to SDA, supporting someone who is looking for SDA or applying yourself, we’d love to chat and help you through the process. Now is the perfect time to start exploring your options! Call 1300 452 732 or email info@guardianliving.com.au

In our latest tenant story, Jamie shared how moving into her own SDA villa in Winter Valley has transformed her relationship with her mum.

Like many adult parent–child relationships, taking that step towards independence can be emotional and uncertain — especially the first time. But with on-site support and a home designed to be accessible, safe and thoughtfully set up, we consistently see adults living in SDA grow in confidence and independence.

Just as importantly, parents often tell us they feel a sense of reassurance and peace they didn’t expect, knowing their child is supported, safe and truly at home.

If you’re a parent of a child with SDA funding, or you’re supporting someone who is, we’d love to talk about how Guardian Living can support both independence and peace of mind.

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025, and we thought what better way to celebrate than chatting with one of our tenants about what IDPwD means to her. Here's what our tenant, Melinda had to say:

"This is a photo of me in my inclusive arts element at the Women's Circus. Swann Biguet is my dance/theatre colleague and here we are rehearsing for our performance event. Performances are incredibly special moments when it’s about cultures and every bone and every body matters.

This performance was part of the Crossing Currents Exhibition held at the Meat Market Stables (Arts space). Such a wonderful night to be part of, and of course this is a perfect example of what it means to be included and sharing my passion through Art and Dance." - Dr Melinda Smith OAM , Guardian Living tenant

In this month's blog, we explore the key reasons why choosing the right Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) isn’t just about a roof over your head — it’s about finding a home that supports independence, safety and dignity.

Here are six things to look for:
✅ Registered & compliant with SDA standards
✅ Transparent communication
✅ Participant-centred design & tenancy
✅ Long-term stability & strong governance
✅ Ethical investment & responsible funding
✅ Respectful, supportive relationships

So, why does it matter? The right SDA provider gives you continuity of care, safe and well-maintained housing, peace of mind, and real choice in how you live – things we value and prioritise at Guardian Living.

Learn more by reading the full blog via the comments.
