In our latest tenant story, Jamie shared how moving into her own SDA villa in Winter Valley has transformed her relationship with her mum.

Like many adult parent–child relationships, taking that step towards independence can be emotional and uncertain — especially the first time. But with on-site support and a home designed to be accessible, safe and thoughtfully set up, we consistently see adults living in SDA grow in confidence and independence.

Just as importantly, parents often tell us they feel a sense of reassurance and peace they didn’t expect, knowing their child is supported, safe and truly at home.

If you’re a parent of a child with SDA funding, or you’re supporting someone who is, we’d love to talk about how Guardian Living can support both independence and peace of mind.

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025, and we thought what better way to celebrate than chatting with one of our tenants about what IDPwD means to her. Here's what our tenant, Melinda had to say:

"This is a photo of me in my inclusive arts element at the Women's Circus. Swann Biguet is my dance/theatre colleague and here we are rehearsing for our performance event. Performances are incredibly special moments when it’s about cultures and every bone and every body matters.

This performance was part of the Crossing Currents Exhibition held at the Meat Market Stables (Arts space). Such a wonderful night to be part of, and of course this is a perfect example of what it means to be included and sharing my passion through Art and Dance." - Dr Melinda Smith OAM , Guardian Living tenant

In this month's blog, we explore the key reasons why choosing the right Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) isn’t just about a roof over your head — it’s about finding a home that supports independence, safety and dignity.

Here are six things to look for:
✅ Registered & compliant with SDA standards
✅ Transparent communication
✅ Participant-centred design & tenancy
✅ Long-term stability & strong governance
✅ Ethical investment & responsible funding
✅ Respectful, supportive relationships

So, why does it matter? The right SDA provider gives you continuity of care, safe and well-maintained housing, peace of mind, and real choice in how you live – things we value and prioritise at Guardian Living.

We are only as good as our tenants are happy — and suffice to say, Belinda Aitken is thriving in her Guardian Living home.

From the moment she moved into her own apartment, Belinda has gained a sense of independence she hadn’t felt before. As she puts it:

“Freedom to choose what you want for dinner. You can do what you want in your apartment. It’s just a freedom to express yourself.”

Her story is one of getting the right supports in place — a strong support coordinator, assessment work accessible technology — and then having the space to flourish:

“I used to live with my mum… Now, with a team of support workers… it gives me the opportunity to do more things.”

It’s been wonderful to see her embrace new passions (including captaining the all-female boccia club, the Melbourne Sirens) and take on challenges with confidence.

Thank you, Belinda, for sharing your journey with us. Check out her full story 👇 .

October is National Safe Work Month—a reminder that every workplace should be safe, healthy and supportive for all.

In disability, this commitment is especially important. Support workers play a vital role in enabling independence and quality of life, and their safety and wellbeing must be a top priority.

Safe Work Australia provides valuable resources to help organisations identify risks, assess hazards and put strong safeguards in place.

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission also offers practical guidance on the Code of Conduct and managing risks such as workplace aggression.

Starting a new chapter with Guardian Living is about more than moving into a home, it’s about becoming part of our community.

Our new-look welcome packs have just arrived, created to help tenants settle in with ease and feel supported every step of the way. Inside, they’ll find everything they need to navigate their new home, connect with our team and know that help is always close at hand. Plus, there's a few gifts to mark the occasion!

It’s a small gesture, but one that reflects something bigger: our commitment to making every tenant feel valued, informed and truly at home. 🏡✨

We are so excited about this!

🏠 Big news from Swan Hill!

🔎After years of searching for the perfect housing solution, three participants that we support have found the perfect site to build their brand-new home that's been designed just for them.

We've partnered with Guardian Living Australia to create something amazing – a purpose-built home where Guardian Living worked closely with participants, their families, support coordinators and occupational therapists to ensure the home met the needs and preferences of each resident.

The house scheduled to be built by the end of the year, and the excitement is already building!

💬 "The participants can't wait," says our House Supervisor Amy Alexander.
💬 "I'm so excited, is it time to move in yet?" one participant celebrated.
💬 Amy adds that "She is also very excited to have her family come and visit the new house."

Here's to new beginnings, family visits, and proving that home really is where the heart is 🧡

Our High Physical Support SDA apartments in Maribyrnong combine thoughtful design with everyday convenience: open-plan layouts, assistive technology, private balconies, two-hour backup power and on-site support. All just steps from shops, transport and community amenities.

For Recep, one of our tenants, the location is everything:

"Everything I need is within walking distance — trams, buses, Highpoint Shopping Centre, and amazing parks by the river."

His home has also given him the confidence to build new skills and independence:

“It’s made me stronger because now I can be more independent. I feel better about myself. I’ve learnt how to cook and take care of myself—things my mum used to do for me. That feels really good.”

For us, the real success isn’t just in the design—it’s in stories like Recep’s, where the right home unlocks a life full of possibility.
