❀️🩡Happy International Asperger's DayπŸ’šπŸ’›

Whilst the term may not be used diagnostically, many still use the term to describe their condition. Aspergers continues to be widely used and understood by many as a condition that largely impacts the understanding of social norms.

This may include struggling with social anxiety, difficulty with social nuances and understanding sarcasm to jokes. Some may find it difficult to regulate emotions or understand emotions of others. Aspergers has many traits similar to ASD which is part of why it is now referred to as ASD level 1.

πŸ’Ÿ To show awareness and support, today I simply wear two different types of socks or shoes to celebrate the uniqueness of those living with Aspergers and highlight both the talents, strengths as well challenges.

Australia Day, celebrated on January 26th, is a time to reflect on the nation’s rich history, diverse culture, and shared identity.

The Australian people should celebrate Australia Day because they have a history and are proud of their ancestors, but as long as they acknowledge that Australia has an ancient history.

The past is very important to the Aboriginal people. And the injustice that happened to our first nations people, if we all can take a moment to also recognise this, the road ahead for continual growth, reconciliation will be much smoother and better.

Kids often struggle with boredom because they're used to constant digital stimulation, but learning to tolerate boredom is a crucial life skill that fosters creativity, independence, and problem-solving.

Parents can help by creating "boredom buster" lists, providing open-ended toys like blocks and art supplies, encouraging outdoor play, and resisting the urge to fill every moment, allowing them space for imaginative, self-directed activities.

πŸ”΄ Overstimulation: Fast-paced digital media makes real-life slower activities seem dull.

πŸ”΄ Lack of practice: Constant scheduling and device use prevent them from developing self-entertainment skills.

πŸ”΄ Skill gap: They haven't learned to manage downtime or generate their own entertainment.

🟒 While it is a common characteristic, struggling with metaphors, idioms and figurative language is not universal. Some individuals with high-functioning autism or Asperger’s may not have these difficulties at all, or they may have learned to compensate through intellectual effort.

When ASD individuals are matched with typically developing peers of similar verbal intelligence, differences in overall comprehension often disappear or become insignificant.

Misinterpretation of irony, sarcasm, and humor can result in social misunderstandings, as these depend heavily on understanding that the speaker's intent is opposite to the literal words.

Despite potential struggles with understanding conventional, culturally-driven metaphors, some 'autistic' individuals may excel at creating new, creative, and novel metaphors, as they may approach language from a unique perspective.

❀️ To start the year, let's take a brief important look at those differences for clarity.

πŸ’™ Aspergers Syndrome (now Autism Level 1)

πŸ’™ No significant delay in language or cognitive development; often average to above-average intelligence.

πŸ’™ Some difficulty with social cues, interaction, and conversation, but can often speak fluently.

πŸ’™ Individuals may lead independent lives or require minimal support.

πŸ’› Profound Autism (Autism Level 3)

πŸ’› Significant intellectual disability; minimal or no verbal language.

πŸ’› Severe deficits in both verbal and non-verbal communication.

πŸ’› Very substantial, requiring round-the-clock care and assistance with daily living.

❀️ And whilst both conditions fall under the Autism Umbrella, it is important to understand respectfully the key differences, why they are far from the same.

Time 2 Train is designed to support all ages on the autism spectrum from Aspergers Syndrome through to Profound 'Classic' Autism.
