With temperatures rising to record levels across Victoria, it’s important for your family to plan how they will stay hydrated, sun safe and out of extreme heat if possible.

Babies and young children are much more sensitive to hot conditions, so follow these steps to help keep your family safe.

Children are more likely to experience health problems from bushfire smoke than adults.

Kids tend to exercise or play outdoors for longer, they breathe more air compared to their body size than older people and it takes longer for developing bodies to clear toxic particles.

This can lead to symptoms of existing health conditions, like asthma, getting worse after they are exposed to polluted air.

There are ways your family can stay safe during times of heavy smoke, so make sure to save this guide to refer back to over summer.

If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms after being exposed to bushfire smoke, talk to your doctor or local healthcare service.

Call an ambulance (000) if your child has difficulty breathing, is wheezing or has tightness in their chest.

Really helpful podcast episode for parents given recent Bondi Shootings - thank you 🙏 .happens talking with Talking to children about traumatic events is one of the hardest parts of parenting, *especially* when the news is everywhere and details feel overwhelming.

In this bonus mini-episode of Prepared, Not Scared, Sarah is joined by child psychologist Deirdre Brandner to talk about how to support children living in Australia after the distressing events in Bondi, without frightening them or giving more information than they need.

We unpack:
▶︎ Why children don’t need to witness an event to be affected
▶︎ How to start the conversation using age-appropriate language
▶︎ What to say (and what not to say) when kids have big feelings
▶︎ Why routines, reassurance and predictability matter so much
▶︎ How to keep communication open without over-exposing children

You don’t need the perfect words.
You just need to be calm, honest and available.

📌 It’s important to note that although this may be a rare event for Australians, we acknowledge that this is most definitely not the case for other countries.
