It is always exciting for us in The Alfred Foundation philanthropy team when one of our supporters is recognised elsewhere for their generosity.
We would like to give a belated congratulations to Denise Palmer on previously receiving the Citizen of the Year award from the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. Denise received the award primarily for her involvement with the Hastings Police Senior Citizens Register, overseeing a program that supported more than 950 vulnerable individuals.
Denise has a long history with The Alfred, receiving operations on her cancer and radiation treatment off and on since 2008. While she is now receiving treatment closer to home, her thoughts are always with The Alfred - especially Professor Jeremy Millar and his team in helping her and many others combat cancer.
"I knew I wanted to give something back to The Alfred, and so I was happy to make a bequest to The Alfred in my Will," she said. "I want it to go towards cancer research, which is vital in fighting this disease.
"Thanks to this dedication by The Alfred, I feel so lucky to have recently celebrated my 76th birthday.
"Every day I wake up and look out on my other joy - my little, colourful garden. Growing flowers, herbs and a few vegetables has been great therapy for me during chemo."

Members of The Alfred Foundation philanthropy team were thrilled to catch up with long-term supporter Ivon Baker to celebrate a recent birthday.
Inspired by care he receives and provided to both his parents and other family members, Ivon is in awe of the work we do here at The Alfred and is a fabulous supporter.

A huge effort by all involved with the inaugural 'Shout for a Mate' event at Mitcham Bowling Club, raising thousands of dollars for care, research and clinical trials of metastatic uveal melanoma at the Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre.
Held in memory of Geoff Elletson, the family hopes for it to become an annual event for people to come together for a night.

The Greenhouse is a fantastic new facility at The Alfred - and one that was established only with significant philanthropic support.
Janet is just one person to have experienced the benefits of the new facility, and her appreciation of The Alfred and its staff is only matched by her son, Josh.
For Dr Maria Tsanglis, the Deputy Director of Adult and Older Adult Service, and Head of Aged Psychiatry, the move to The Greenhouse has been a long time coming.
“We now have a physical environment befitting the care needs of our patients and also befitting our staff,” she said.
Congrats to Alfred oncology nurse Corey who has already surpassed his fundraising goal of $2,500 in the lead up to the Ballarat Marathon - his third 42.2km event!
"I'm raising money for The Alfred Foundation because my patients reguarly ask how they can give back," Corey said.
For more than 25 years, Robert and Henry have been devoted supporters of The Alfred.
Profoundly grateful for the lifesaving treatment Robert received, the couple made a deeply personal decision - to leave a gift in their Wills to support the hospital's vital Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) service.
The HPB service at The Alfred delivers highly specialised care for patients with complex conditions affecting the liver, pancreas and bile ducts - areas where early intervention and expert treatment can be truly lifesaving.
Through their legacy, Robert and Henry are helping to ensure that future patients facing these challenging conditions continue to benefit from world-class innovation and care.
There are many meaningful ways to support The Alfred.
For Elisha King, it was holding an event in memory of her sister, Chelsey, in order to raise money and awareness of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Gestures like this remind us that care at The Alfred is truly a team effort — from our clinicians and researchers to the community members who stand beside us.
Congratrulations to our raffle winner Carolyn who recently drove away with her very own Jayco Starcraft Caravan worth over $68,000!
