🧪🎓✏️Our February Science Snapshot:

High Intensity Interval Training Improves Body Composition in Older Adults

A recently published study of 120 older Australians compared high, moderate and low intensity exercise to examine the effect on both body fat and muscle mass. The findings showed that while all types of exercise intensity had a beneficial effect on body fat, only high intensity exercise improved muscle mass at the same time.

This study highlights the importance of maintaining some regular vigorous efforts as we age and directly opposes the idea that we should ‘slow down’ later in life.

🚨 Inspiring Story Alert 🚨

This month we would like to highlight the success of one of our regular Your Move Health group session attendees! Faye has been training consistently with us twice per week for the past 3 years, with a focus on improving stamina, leg strength and balance safely given her cardiac history and knee osteoarthritis.

When Faye first started with us in early 2023, she was able to stand from a chair 7 times in 30 seconds, and this performance was limited by knee pain from her arthritis and a feeling of “jelly legs”. At her most recent assessment Faye completed 14 chair stands in 30 seconds, with no knee pain and legs feeling strong, so she continued on to complete a total of 27 chair stands in 60 seconds.

Faye is a brilliant example of what can be achieved by consistently showing up regularly and gradually challenging your capacity. Even at 85 years old, Faye has proved that strength, stamina and balance can improve with regular resistance exercise.

We are proud of you and your achievements Faye!

🧪🎓✏️Our January Science Snapshot:

Long Term Strength Training Improves Hip & Knee Arthritis Symptoms

A recent meta-analysis combined the results of 280 separate studies on the effects of exercise on hip and knee osteoarthritis symptoms, with the aim of determining which exercise variables are the most important.

The results showed that resistance training interventions lasting at least 3-6 months reduced pain and improved physical function for both hip and knee arthritis. Interestingly, the total volume (amount) of exercise completed and the specific exercises involved did not seem to matter as much as just regular completion of lower body strength exercise over a sustained 3-6 month period.

The take home message: for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis wanting to improve pain and physical function, resistance training doesn’t have to be perfect, you just have to keep at it consistently to see the benefits.

What a beautiful and moving Christmas video.

This is why we train for strength. Not for looks, but so that we can do the things in life that are important and bring us joy.

Enjoy some movement this festive season!

This may be the best Christmas ad produced in 2020. Just fantastic. What do you think?

On the menu this month is the spectacular Endeavour Fern Gully Walk in Red Hill.
This 2km loop through an un-spoilt fern gully features numerous rare plant species as well as a variety of animals and birds, all easily viewable from the boardwalk trail, perfect for a family Christmas walk.

The entrance to this trail is located opposite the Red Hill recreation reserve on Arthurs Seat Road. Note that the trail itself is an easy walk, but access to the trail is via a relatively steep path from the car park.
