๐Ÿšจ Inspiring Story Alert ๐Ÿšจ

This month's inspiring story is 39-year-old Aussie firefighter and ultra-marathon runner, Phil Gore.

Last month Phil won the Backyard Ultra World Championships, running 114 laps of the 6.7km course, for a total of 764km over almost 5 gruelling days.

The gruelling backyard ultra format requires competitors to complete a loop of the 6.7km course every hour, on the hour, until there is just one person left. The tight turnaround times between laps mean competitors have little time to sleep, eat or wash during the event.

You can read more about his amazing feat in an ABC news article here:

Ultra-athlete Phil Gore is Australia's newest world champion after five days of near-continuous running in Bell Buckle, Tennessee.

๐Ÿงช๐ŸŽ“โœ๏ธOur November Science Snapshot:

Exercise is considered a first-line therapy for people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

A recent review of the research describes a broad range of mechanisms through which exercise can improve blood glucose management.

This review highlighted that both aerobic and resistance exercise improve glycaemic control (but through different mechanisms), and that the timing of exercise (morning vs. afternoon, pre- vs post-meal) can influence the effects of exercise on blood sugar levels.

๐Ÿšจ Inspiring Story Alert ๐Ÿšจ

This month's inspiring story is our very own group attendee Helen!

Helen began regular strength & conditioning group sessions at Your Move Health in February 2023.

Her primary goal was to improve her strength and bone density, given her diagnosis of osteoporosis as a consequence of breast cancer treatment.

For the past 2.5 years, Helen been completing a tailored exercise program incorporating heavy resistance training and impact exercise multiple times per week. As a result of her hard work and consistency, Helen's most recent bone health tests showed an increase in bone density, resulting in her no longer being classified as osteoporotic. Not only that, but she has recently achieved a personal goal of being able to hold her own body weight for 30 seconds!

Helenโ€™s story is a powerful example of how regular, targeted, bone-stimulating exercise can lead to meaningful improvements in bone health and broader physical capacity.

๐Ÿงช๐ŸŽ“โœ๏ธOur October Science Snapshot:

Exercise reduces fatigue and improves quality of life for women with metastatic breast cancer.

A study of 357 women with metastatic breast cancer published in 2024, examined the effects of a 9-month supervised exercise program on fatigue and quality of life.

Compared with standard care, the women who participated in the exercise program experienced lower fatigue and higher health-related quality of life.

We are particularly proud of this study, as Your Move Health was actually a training site for a number of participants of this trial!
