Authorised by A.Butler, Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation, Melbourne Butler, Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, Melbourne.

The ANMF is the largest union in the country with over 302,000 nurses, midwives and carers joining strongly together since 1924. We are proud of the work that our members do, in every hospital, nursing home, GP clinic, community health practice, from rural and remote Australia to large hospitals in big cities. As a national body, the Federal Office would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging across Australia, with particular acknowledgement to the Greater Kulin Nation, the Traditional Owners of the lands where the Melbourne Office is located and the Ngunnawal people, the Traditional Owners where the Canberra office is located. We remain committed to healing work through Voice, Treaty, Truth and our Reconciliation Action Plan. https://www.anmf.org.au/about/reconciliation-action-plan

. Every Ribbon. Every Conversation.

Today is National Survivors' Day - a day to acknowledge the lived experience of survivors of s*xual assault and institutional abuse.

Tying ribbons of every colour represents an individual, a family, a whistleblower and a community that has been impacted by s*xual assault.

Every conversation we can have about survivors and their journeys, shines a light in these dark places, working towards a better, kinder, and safer future.

Nurses, midwives and carers deliver care to survivors in their practice and can be survivors themselves.

On this day, we choose to recognise the incredible strength, resilience, bravery, humbleness, compassion and care of survivors and the work we can all do together.

Emergency nurse Ruth spoke about her time deployed to Gaza at our recent ANMF Biennial National Conference.

To hear her lived experience of providing healthcare on the frontlines was incredibly moving. Her connection to her patients, the uncertainty, destruction and trauma witnessed and deeply felt, the light that healthcare could provide within it.

She also spoke of losing colleagues and the overwhelming flow of patients as other health facilities and hospitals were destroyed.

The World Health Organisation has reported 735 attacks on health care in Gaza, affecting 125 health facilities, and damaging 34 hospitals.

Conflicts in other regions are also targeting healthcare workers and facilities, despite the right to protection under International Humanitarian Law.

Nurses, midwives and healthcare workers, together, we are working to ensure that healthcare is never a target.

An informal portrait of Australian Army Nursing Staff (AANS) homeward bound on HMAT Shropshire after service in WW1. From left to right are Nurses Quinn, Warner, Homewood, Baron and R.A. Skyring.

Their faces are weathered by their WWI service, a tired, purposeful resilience, tempered by the peace of finally coming home. We can only imagine what they truly experienced.

Formed in 1902, the Australian Army Nursing Service consisted of civilian nurses, primarily women who were educated and unmarried, between the ages of 25 and 40. Nursing was one of the few avenues for women to work in these times; yet, even in the army, women were paid approximately half of what their male rank counterparts earned.

Across the conflict zones and battlefields of WWI, they worked to deliver life-saving care in some of the most challenging conditions and were essential in the complex triage to transport and treat sick and wounded soldiers.

With 2,861 women in the AANS during World War I, they served across Europe, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Burma and India.

On the 11th day
Of the 11th month
At the 11th hour

We shall remember them.
