Authorised by A.Butler, Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation, Melbourne Butler, Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, Melbourne.

The ANMF is the largest union in the country with over 302,000 nurses, midwives and carers joining strongly together since 1924. We are proud of the work that our members do, in every hospital, nursing home, GP clinic, community health practice, from rural and remote Australia to large hospitals in big cities. As a national body, the Federal Office would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging across Australia, with particular acknowledgement to the Greater Kulin Nation, the Traditional Owners of the lands where the Melbourne Office is located and the Ngunnawal people, the Traditional Owners where the Canberra office is located. We remain committed to healing work through Voice, Treaty, Truth and our Reconciliation Action Plan. https://www.anmf.org.au/about/reconciliation-action-plan
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation Federal Office represents our members in federal industrial, professional and political arenas, getting decision-makers, politicians and bureaucrats to enable nurses, midwives and carers to provide quality patient care. Our Branches are there for you when you need support and representation, when you have a workplace issue, to help you with education, professional and career development, campaigning for improvements to wages and conditions or when you simply want to talk to other nurses, midwives and carers. Starting out as a graduate nurse or midwife can be exciting, overwhelming and everything in between. Recent graduates reflect on what helped them find their feet – and the advice they’d pass on to those just starting out.

“You don’t have to walk this road alone”, says mental health nurse Nkem Obele, part of Canberra’s mental health crisis response team.

This Mental Health Nurses’ Day, we recognise the expertise, skills, and compassionate care that mental health nurses deliver, supporting people and strengthening health and communities across Australia.

Evidence is essential. Take part in research about nurses and midwives' working lives.
Researchers at the University of Melbourne are seeking hospital-based health professionals to take part in a national survey about their experiences of nature and greenspace in the workplace. Nurses, midwives who are employed in clinical or non-clinical roles in Australian hospitals can participate.

Nurses, midwives and direct care workers face microbial resistance in hospitals, aged care and other health settings.

The sixth national report from the Australian Centre for Disease Control (CDC) brings together 2022-24 data from hospitals, aged care settings and the wider community on how antibiotics are being used and where resistance is fast emerging.

If nurses, midwives and direct-care workers are unable to afford to live near where they work, hospitals and aged care homes will struggle.

Priced out with high rents and housing prices, unable to save for a deposit, and enduring long, draining commutes on top of their skilled, demanding work, our members across Australia are reporting their struggles with housing affordability.

In a system that works for investors, not essential workers, it's time to address tax concessions that are effectively pricing workers out of housing.

Can you imagine the daily grind of finishing a 15-hour shift with a 90-minute commute? This is the reality facing essential workers like nurses who are often being priced out of the communities they work in.

This needs to change, and the best way to win change is to join your union and fight for both better wages as well as housing tax reform, including:

⭐ limit negative gearing tax breaks to just one investment property
⭐ reduce the Capital Gains Tax discount from 50% to 25%
⭐ grandfather existing arrangements for five years

There are many paths to take in nursing and midwifery. One of them is finding yourself providing critical care in the air, in helicopters, planes, and other transport solutions for patients.

This Critical Care Transport Nurses Day, we recognise the speciality of delivering timely, high-quality, patient-centred care that can be fast-paced, involving critical decision-making and adaptability, ensuring patients reach their appropriate destination quickly and safely.

with ANMF SA Branch members taking action this week.
Working together in union amplifies your voice, actions and demand for respect!

Today, members at Lyell McEwin Hospital unanimously voted on the below resolution:

That members of the Lyell McEwin Hospital resolve to undertake a 24-hour site stoppage commencing 7:00am Thursday, 19 February, in support of enterprise bargaining negotiations.

This decision is made following months of negotiation in which the Government’s offer has failed to align with national market wages and conditions necessary to attract and retain nursing and midwifery staff in South Australia.

Members confirm that:

👉 The action is taken reluctantly and as a last resort.
👉 The Emergency Department and ICU will remain fully operational.
👉 Essential and emergency surgical services will continue.
👉 All other services will operate on night duty safe staffing levels with patient safety remaining key.
👉 The remainder of the South Australian hospital system will continue to operate as normal.
👉 All mandated 1:1 ratios, including in critical care, must be maintained.

Members further note that failure to achieve nationally competitive wages and conditions risks ongoing workforce attrition.

Without meaningful reform, reduced service capacity for 24 hours risks becoming permanent due to inability to attract and retain staff.

This action is taken in defence of safe, sustainable healthcare for the South Australian community.

Today, we remember Australian nurses at the Radji Beach massacre on Banka Island, Indonesia, during World War II.

After the ship SS Vyner Brooke was bombed and sunk, 22 Australian nurses, along with wounded soldiers and civilians, made it to Radji Beach. Japanese soldiers arrived, bayoneted the men, and ordered the nurses to walk into the ocean, where they were shot mercilessly from behind.

As they marched into the water, Matron Irene Drummond provided these final words to her nurses.

Today, we remember these fallen nurses and work towards global peace, human rights and the protection of all healthcare workers in war zones.

Nurses, midwives, and healthcare workers in conflict zones are risking everything to save lives. Let’s stand with them.

To protect healthcare workers and uphold international humanitarian law, we are calling on the Australian Government to:

1. Continue to press for full protection of healthcare workers under the Geneva Conventions, ensuring these international laws are upheld in every conflict.

2. Use Australia's voice on the global stage to demand accountability and safety for nurses, midwives and all those who provide essential care.

Stand with us to ensure health workers and their patients are
