Observed annually in the third week of November, Alopecia Awareness Week, an initiative by Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation Inc., raises awareness of alopecia areata - an often misunderstood autoimmune condition. Affecting around 2% of the population, impacting men and women equally, it occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, resulting in hair loss. While it can develop at any age, it is most commonly seen in teenagers and young adults.
This awareness week highlights the importance of early diagnosis and access to treatment. Although there is currently no cure, promising research - including clinical trials conducted by the Skin Health Institute - is advancing treatment options and improving patient outcomes.
As part of our ongoing education efforts, our recent Clinical Treatment Series featured A/Prof Aaron Robinson and focused on alopecia areata. The session covered hair anatomy and physiology, the pathophysiology of alopecia areata, and practical strategies to enhance diagnosis and treatment in clinical practice.
