Everyday physical activity, like going for a short walk or playing with the kids, may provide short-term benefits for cognitive health, equivalent to reversing four years of cognitive aging. That was a key finding for my colleagues and me in our new study, which was published in the journal Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Prior to enrollment into a study of diet and dementia risk, we asked a diverse sample of 204 middle-aged adults to check in five times per day for a period of nine days, via a smartphone application.

The study shows cognitive processing speed increased even when participants were moderately active.

✨ OT Week - 27 October to 2 November ✨ Paediatric Occupational Therapy

Paediatric OT's help children develop the skills they need to function in day-to-day life, whether that is at home, school or in the community.

They work with children and their families in developing their confidence, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and wellbeing to assist children in becoming as independent as possible with their every day lives and to ensure they are able to engage in meaningful activities.

OT's can work with the child or adolescent to build strength and over come challenges in the following areas:

✨ Social and Play Skills
✨ Communication Skills and Confidence
✨ Emotional Regulation and Behaviour
✨ Sensory Processing
✨ Handwriting
✨ Gross Motor Skills
✨ Fine Motor Skills
✨ Visual Attention
✨ Self-care Skills

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy services aim to support individuals to achieve life goals through participation and engagement. Support and therapy explores remedial and compensatory strategies to assist individuals with returning to previous or maximal functioning, as well as recommending supports to compensate for any disability in order to enable someone to achieve their goals.

Occupational Therapy goals may be as simple as showering independently once a week, and may become as complex as returning to full time employment. No matter the difficulty of the goal, Occupational Therapy can help individuals achieve their desired function levels.

Stroke survivors who adhere to physical activity guidelines developed to ward off additional strokes may reap an added benefit: better mental health, new research suggests.

The study, published June 23 in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found stroke survivors who engaged in moderate physical activity at least four times a week experienced fewer days of poor mental health than their less-active peers. The study found similar mental health benefits for heart attack survivors.

A new study suggests stroke survivors who follow physical activity guidelines for preventing future strokes may also experience better mental health than their less-active peers.

At Pace Health Management, we offer small, supportive group sessions designed to help you move better, feel stronger, and stay accountable. Here’s why group exercise can be a game-changer for your physical and mental health.

What is Speech Pathology?

To many of us, talking is an automatic and smooth day-to-day activity. Several people, however, find it hard to understand what others just said, express themselves well, make sense of what they are reading, and write messages down. Speech Pathology is an allied health practice that helps with these challenges in communicating.

Communicating involves a lot of internal events:

➡️ maintaining attention on who is talking, on a topic or a long question
➡️ understanding timely and accurately what’s being said, what’s written or asked of us
➡️ sorting out our ideas, thoughts and emotions
➡️ talking about our day, experiences, ideas or emotions
➡️ changing our tone or style depending on the topic or who we are with

When there are errors in the way we produce specific speech sounds or when there is a constant difficulty in ‘getting the words out’ smoothly, our ability to express ourselves also makes it challenging to communicate, relate and build relationships.

These difficulties can make it difficult to navigate play, keep up with school demands, manage everyday activities, build relationships and even work.

Speech pathology helps with gaining an in-depth understanding of your communication abilities, where your strengths and weaknesses lie, supporting you in meeting your immediate goals and futureproofing for needs and challenges later on.

Is your child having difficulty with speech, language, or communication?
