Why I recommend Reiki when you’re stressed:

When something stressful happens to you, your body activates the sympathetic nervous system to address the situation.

This can cause dilated pupils, accelerated heart rate, raised blood pressure and restriction of the digestive system.

When you experience a significant level of stress in the body for a prolonged period of time, your body can get stuck in a sympathetic nervous system response.

This can lead to gut issues, anxiety, insomnia and all kinds of hormonal problems.

The obvious thought is to want to relax the body and get it out of stress. However, when someone is in this acute or chronic state of stress the body is on high alert, and will often react to attempts to calm with a heightened defence response.

You may have experienced this yourself, when someone tells you to “calm down” or places their hand on your arm and you want to punch them in the face.

Your system is so wired that it doesn’t feel safe enough to lean into these approaches.

Maybe when you’ve gone to have a massage to “relax” the masseuses attempts to release your muscles causes you to tense up and experience more pain.

Or in meditation you find your mind bouncing off the walls.

When this happens the body needs to be gently eased into a space of safety. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system which is also known as “Rest & Repair”.

This is our state of healing.

Because Reiki is such an incredibly gentle therapeutic approach, the body can gradually lean into the experience without feeling threatened.

As an energetic system of healing it also bypasses the brain and any overthinking.

It makes no difference if your mind wants to shout in protest at the beginning of the session, because we’re not working with thoughts and the mind.

We are working with the innate system of energy that already exists within the body.

This is why in Reiki sessions you can be surprised to find your digestive system coming back online, making all sorts of gurgling noises. You also notice your heart rate drop.

Your body feels safe.

It is from this place of safety that you are able to bring the body back into balance and release some of the stress that has building up in your system.

You gain a peace of mind that allows you to think more clearly about your life.

Reiki is non-invasive, gentle and works with the natural healing systems of the body.

In my experience, it is one of the best things you can do for yourself if you are experiencing stress and struggling with how to release it from your body.
