SCOLIOSIS,
- Atlas Physio

Scoliosis refers to abnormal curvatures and rotations of the spinal column, that are commonly diagnosed in childhood or in early adolescence. The spinal column is a collection of bones that make up the skeletal components of the neck, part of the ribcage, the lower back, and the back of the pelvis.

Scoliosis occurs in two to three percent of the population, and commonly develops and is diagnosed in infancy or early childhood. The primary age of onset for scoliosis is between 10-15 years old, and while the occurrence of the condition is equal for both genders, females are eight times more likely for their scoliosis condition to progress to a level of severity that requires treatment. Scoliosis can also occur in adults, occurring in almost one in ten adults over the age of twenty-five and increasing to almost seven tenths of adults over the age of 60, and this increase is typically associated with age-related degeneration of the spine.

PARKINSON'S DISEASE,
- Atlas Physio

Parkinson's Disease is a neurological condition that affects a person's ability to move safely, balance, and coordinate their movements. Parkinson’s disease causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walking and talking. They may also have mental and behavioural changes, sleep problems, depression, memory difficulties, and fatigue.

Parkinson's Disease progresses with time, and the nature of that progression is different for every person. Some will experience mild symptoms from the time of their diagnosis and experience no deterioration from that point. Others will experience worsening symptoms that require additional support. Still others will experience patterns of fluctuation.

Management of your discomfort depends on its causative factors, how it feels and changes during the day, what makes it better and worse, and the length of time you have been experiencing that pain. At Atlas Physio, we will provide you with education, structured management, and ongoing monitoring of your pain both in-clinic and out. CONCUSSION
- Atlas Physio

Concussions are medical events that affect the brain. In a concussion an impact to the head from an outside force or abrupt displacement of the head forward and backward causes the brain to move rapidly, backward and forward and even twisting, within the skull. Concussions typically occur within the context of contact or combat sports. Boxers, Mixed Martial Artists, American Football, Australian Rules and Rugby players are all at increased risk of experiencing blows directly to the head or blows to the body that have the potential to cause a concussion. Similarly, blows to the head do not need to be sustained in violent or sporting contexts.

Physiotherapy management of concussion involves preventative and rehabilitative elements. In the immediate period, triaging and assessment of the injured individual is essential to detect and control the risk of adverse outcomes. This can be done either in the clinic or on the sportsfield by a therapist that has completed further education in onsite concussion assessment and risk management. Following stabilisation of symptoms, strengthening the neck and the shoulders generally improves the ability of the body to sustain impacts to that region and in turn to protect the brain.

Management of your discomfort depends on its causative factors, how it feels and changes during the day, what makes it better and worse, and the length of time you have been experiencing that pain. At Atlas Physio, we will provide you with education, structured management, and ongoing monitoring of your pain both in-clinic and out. JOINT REPLACEMENT,
- Atlas Physio

Joint replacements are surgeries conducted to replace bony human joints with prostheses to restore function and minimise pain. Every year in Australia, over one-hundred thousand surgeries are performed to replace knees and hips alone. Other joints like the shoulders, the elbows, and ankles can also be replaced, but hip and knee surgeries are by far the most common. People elect to undergo joint replacement surgeries for many reasons, but the most common is because the joint is painful to use because of age-related weardown of one of its component parts.

Physiotherapy input following joint replacement is important for two reasons. Firstly, because surgical procedures require causing damage to the body to achieve a therapeutic aim, rehabilitation will focus on restoring the limb to as good a functional state as it can be before undertaking heavier exercise or returning to work and life. Secondly, physiotherapy rehabilitation is necessary to minimise complications such as stiffness, pain and weakness.

Management of your discomfort depends on its causative factors, how it feels and changes during the day, what makes it better and worse, and the length of time you have been experiencing that pain. At Atlas Physio, we will provide you with education, structured management, and ongoing monitoring of your pain both in-clinic and out. MUSCULAR WEAKNESS,
- Atlas Physio

Muscular weakness refers to a situation in which a muscle or group of muscles cannot produce the strength needed for a task. Muscular weakness can happen after periods of intense exercise or effort. This is muscular fatigue and is a normal part of living. The harder muscle groups will need to work, the longer they will need to rest. Even if the effort isn't intense but sustained, muscle groups can become fatigued with time. Anyone who's started slouching after a long period of sitting down at a desk can attest to that. Muscular fatigue can become a problem if the fatigue occurs earlier than expected or takes a longer time than usual to recover.

There are other causes for muscular weakness in addition to this, such as illnesses, injuries, changes in the connection between the muscle and the brain, and changes in the physiology of the muscle itself. In these cases, weakness is the result of a process that needs to be addressed alongside strengthening the muscles themselves. Common causes of muscular weakness in this way include decreased endurance because of changes to the heart and lungs, decreased strength due to a stroke, decreased coordination and sustainability of movements because of Parkinson's disease, and many other factors.

Management of your discomfort depends on its causative factors, how it feels and changes during the day, what makes it better and worse, and the length of time you have been experiencing that pain. At Atlas Physio, we will provide you with education, structured management, and ongoing monitoring of your pain both in-clinic and out. CORE MUSCLE WEAKNESS,
- Atlas Physio

Core Weakness refers to poor strength, power generation or muscular endurance of one or more of the muscles that comprise the Core Muscles. The Core Muscles include the abdominals, the obliques, the transversus muscles, as well as the muscles of the diaphragm and those muscles that make up the Pelvic Floor. Weakness of the Core Muscles can lead to poor posture when in static or moving positions, can lead to increased discomfort in the lower and midback, can lead to increased stiffness of muscles around the core, and can increase the risk of irritation and injury of those structures.

Weakness of the Core Muscles, poor posture, and poor muscular endurance are risk factors for developing back pain, and are often the first things addressed in the management of that condition. However, Core Weakness can have other effects too. A weak Core makes it more difficult to lift, move, and push objects as well as increasing the risk of injury from recreational exercises like running, weightlifting, and cycling, as well as awkward movements like those needed around the house.

Management of your discomfort depends on its causative factors, how it feels and changes during the day, what makes it better and worse, and the length of time you have been experiencing that pain. Contact us to arrange an assessment, and to take the first step on a course of corrective care today.

SPONDY SPINAL CONDITIONS,
- Atlas Physio

Spondylosis, Spondylitis, Spondylolysis, and Spondylolisthesis are structural conditions that affect the alignment and integrity of the bony parts of the human spine. Spondy- conditions typically occur in the lower back, but due to the lifetime strain, ongoing loading and physical activities, as well as the effect of age- and disease-related deterioration, it is possible for Spondy- conditions to affect other segments of the spine as well.

Regardless of the nature and extent of the condition, physiotherapy intervention can help to assess, diagnose, triage and manage any discomfort as well as take note of the presence or likelihood of serious side-effects or symptoms that warrant further investigation.

Management of your discomfort depends on its causative factors, how it feels and changes during the day, what makes it better and worse, and the length of time you have been experiencing that pain. Contact us to arrange an assessment, and to take the first step on a course of corrective care today.
