In a ceremony that was both poignant and joyous, residents of Uniting AgeWell’s Latvian Community turned out in force to celebrate Latvian Independence Day.

There were smiles and quite a few misty eyes as residents from the Wantirna South aged care community and retirement village watched first the Australian flag raised followed by the Latvian flag. As the Latvian flag was unfurled the gathering sang the Latvian national anthem.

A beautiful poem written in Latvian was read by 99-year-old Betija Plume, who was among the 20,000 Latvians who relocated to Australia in the late 1940s and early 1950s after being forced to flee their homeland during the Soviet occupation of Latvia during World War II.

One of those attending was Jänis Dëlins, Honorary Consul of Latvia in Melbourne, who has addressed the ceremony at the site for the last 15 or so years. Jänis stressed how the site is welcoming of those from across the world and paid tribute to the dedication of the staff.

Afterwards there was a champagne breakfast with an assortment of traditional Latvian foods.

Living Legends

While the Spring Racing Carnival is all but over, a group of residents from Uniting AgeWell Preston Community are still talking about their wonderful visit to the Living Legends.

Just out of Melbourne, the horse farm is a retirement community for some famous and not so famous race horses.

The group enjoyed dressing up for the day and having the opportunity to hold an actual Melbourne Cup trophy.

It was especially significant for one resident, Elaine who was gifted Melbourne Cup 1992 winner Subzero's saddle blanket.

Elaine decided to donate her prized possession to the museum there. A family affair, Elaine's daughter Siobhan and grandson Luke were there for the presentation.

All enjoyed a lovely Devonshire Tea with the 1995 Melbourne Cup at the head of the table.

Creating homes with heart

Creating intricately designed and furnished dolls’ houses is a real labour of love for Dorothy and Les Allwood.

Over the last five years they’ve created eight houses and one church, with Les doing the building and Dorothy the decorating. They are proudly displayed in their unit at Uniting AgeWell Aldersgate Village where they live.

The church, complete with little wooden pews and a graveyard at the back, was fashioned after the wooden All Saints Launceston North (Barneys) in Newnham nearby.

“All the houses and the church are made of wood, some are double storeys with staircases, some even have battery-operated lights,” explains Dorothy. “I love making curtains, the carpets and even the pillows and blankets for the beds."

AgeWell Awards...the countdown is on!
“I’m still just me – only more dedicated and inspired than ever,” is the way Dario Musco sums up how being Uniting AgeWell's 2024 Employee of the Year has shaped his life over the last 12 months.
With the countdown to our AgeWell Awards on Thursday 20 November, Dario, who was also honoured with the 2024 Living our Values Award, reflects on a big year.
He and his partner, Ric, have moved down from Castlemaine to Melbourne to be closer to Ric's father who needs extra care. Dario has also taken up a new role with Uniting AgeWell.

This year, you can join the event via Livestream from our website, from 2pm on Thursday, 20 November here: https://www.unitingagewell.org/agewell-awards/agewell-awards-2025/

Until then, read how Dario still feels humbled at receiving the incredible accolade - and how his life has come full circle from helping customers to being family of a customer needing the extra care that our residential aged care communities provide.

On World Diabetes Day it’s time to reflect on the holistic care that Uniting AgeWell provides to our customers both in the community and in residential aged care.

The latest statistics show that one in 15 Australian adults has diabetes.

Our nurses – pictured here at one of their ongoing professional training workshops - provide holistic care based on ensuring the needs of each of their individual customers are met when it comes to managing this chronic disease.

“The nurses work closely with the doctors, dieticians and whoever else is involved in their care to ensure the older person can live their healthiest life possible," explains Kirsty Thomas, Uniting AgeWell's Clinical Education Business Partner Quality. "They also access appropriate information in helping educate the customer to help them manage their diet and exercise regime.”

Elizabeth Grogan, Uniting AgeWell's Hume Home Care Program Manager, says nurses are proactive as well as reactive when it comes to providing holistic care in the management of diabetes to customers in the community.

Uniting AgeWell offers a range of services for those with diabetes, including podiatry and foot care, dentistry, physiotherapy and exercise physiology to help with walking. Occupational therapists can also prescribe aids and equipment.

Deb Williams, a resident at Box Hill Community is very creative, enjoying both art and poetry.

She penned this poem in 2019 and it is read at the Remembrance Day Service each year.

It was shared again today and she is delighted to share it with the wider Uniting AgeWell community.

On Remembrance Day each year, we take a moment to honour those who gave their lives in service.

Today marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War 1. Every year at the 11th hour (11am) on the 11th month, millions around the world pause in silence to remember the sacrifices that so many made.

So too, Uniting AgeWell pays tribute to all those who have served. We are honoured to provide services to many customers and residents who have been impacted by war. People like Brian Anderson from Uniting AgeWell Camberwell Community, Condare Court.

Preserving a lifetime of memories

There was laughter, hugs and even a few lumps in throats in a moving gift of intergenerational respect and care, as a group of older Tasmanians were presented with personal biographies of their lives by students from a nearby college.

Residents at Mornington Community Lillian Martin were given hard-bound biographies of their lives by students from MacKillop Catholic College at a special afternoon tea on 21 October. Many family members also attended.

This was the pinnacle of an intergenerational school program titled Echoes of Grace: A Journey Through a Tough Time.

Teacher Sue Howard says a key component is gathering the rich histories of the residents to create personalised books for them and their families.

Sue says this honours the lives of the residents and provides students with a deeper appreciation for the diverse experiences that shape our community.

Over 18 students visited the residents and engaged in deep conversations in order to capture and write up their biographies. They also obtained photographs from the residents to put in the books, each with its own personal cover.

Drawing deep

It’s called the Oasis Meditation Group – but really, it’s so much more.

Following Spiritual Care Week (19-25 October) it's important to highlight the widespread impact of spiritual care on those we serve. Every fortnight for the past year, a group of residents at Uniting AgeWell Latrobe Community, Strathdevon gather in a session of inclusive togetherness that affords them the opportunity to relax, reflect on their innermost feelings and share with others in a safe, non-judgemental space.

Chaplain Pauline Simpson nominates a theme, which is followed by meditation - and once the mind and body are relaxed there's the opportunity for inner reflection on the topic. Then of course is the time to open up and share thoughts and feelings on the topic - or wherever the topic at hand leads to. Sometimes it lasts an hour, sometimes longer.

October is a special time of the year when Uniting AgeWell recognises length of service milestones.

This year the length of service ranged from 5 to an incredible 40 years! This equates to 3,505 years of experience!

A total of 350 staff received a certificate acknowledging 5, 10,15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 milestone years of service at celebratory lunches and teas at sites across Victoria and Tasmania.

While each staff member has a unique story, the joy they receive in helping older people live their best lives, underpins all that they do. They’re still at the organisation, not just because it is their career, but because it’s where they want to be.

A huge congratulations to all.

Five fabulous years!

October is a special time of year at Uniting AgeWell - a time where we acknowledge the length of service milestones of team members.

This year, milestones range from five to an incredible 40 years and represent a total of 3505 years of experience!

For many, it is the values of the organisation that has encouraged them to stay and build a meaningful career in aged care.

"I like the positive culture of Uniting AgeWell. We have a healthy workplace culture. I love that I have an opportunity each day to come to work and help the elderly in our community by educating them about Support at Home and how we can assist to make a difference in their daily lives," says Care Organiser Sash Rozairo.
