“DANGER FOR DOGS ON HOT SURFACES”
IS 25 DEGREES TO HOT TO WALK YOUR DOG?

🌡️ Surface Temperature Insights

🚫Pavement reaching 50–55°C on a 25°C day is supported by studies showing that dark asphalt can absorb and retain heat, often reaching double the ambient temperature under direct sun.

🚫Sand heating to 45–50°C is typical in open beach environments, especially when dry and exposed to midday sun.

🚫Artificial turf exceeding 60°C has been documented in multiple studies, with synthetic grass known to trap heat far more than natural surfaces.

❗️These figures align with general findings from:

🔴Veterinary safety advisories and pet first aid training materials.

🔴Environmental surface temperature studies conducted in Australia and internationally.

🔴Climate data from the Bureau of Meteorology, which tracks ambient and surface temperature trends across the country.

📛 Why It Matters for Pet Safety
- Dogs’ paw pads are sensitive and can suffer thermal burns in under a minute on surfaces above 50°C.

This is why I do what I do, to get great feedback like I did this week.
How wonderful this grooming student was able to save this dog. Well done and I applaud the amazing effort staying calm in what would have been a very traumatic situation. 🐶❤️

🌊🐾 Beach days with your dog can be magical—but they come with hidden dangers. Here's how to keep your pup safe by the shore!

Heading to the beach with your furry friend?
While it’s a fantastic way to bond and enjoy the outdoors, there are several hazards that can turn fun into an emergency. Here’s what to watch out for—and how to stay safe:

⚠️ Common Beach Hazards for Dogs & Safety Tips

- Salt Toxicity: Drinking seawater can cause vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, and even seizures.
👉 Tip: Always bring fresh water and a portable bowl. Encourage frequent drinking and rinse off salt from their coat.

-Hot Sand: Sand can burn paw pads, especially on sunny days.
👉 Tip: Test the sand with your hand. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog. Use booties or visit during cooler hours.

- Heatstroke: Dogs overheat quickly, especially brachycephalic breeds like pugs and bulldogs.
👉 Tip: Provide shade, take breaks, and avoid midday heat. Watch for signs like excessive panting or lethargy.

- Sand Ingestion: Dogs may swallow sand while digging or playing, leading to intestinal blockages.
👉 Tip: Supervise play, rinse toys, and discourage digging near food or treats.

- Secondary Drowning: Inhaling water during swimming can cause delayed respiratory distress.
👉 Tip: Rinse your dog after swimming and monitor for coughing or fatigue hours later.

- Jellyfish & Sea Creatures: Washed-up jellyfish can sting or be toxic.
👉 Tip: Keep your dog on a lead near the shoreline and avoid areas with visible sea life.

- Strong Currents: Not all dogs are strong swimmers. Waves and rips can be dangerous.
👉 Tip: Use a dog life vest and keep them in shallow water.

- Fishing Hooks & Debris: Hidden hooks or sharp objects can injure paws or be swallowed.
👉 Tip: Avoid fishing areas and scan the sand before settling in.

🐶💧 Your dog’s safety starts with awareness and preparation. Pack smart, stay alert, and enjoy the beach responsibly.

We've all been there!!
Being distracted by a phone while walking a dog can lead to serious risks for both the pet and the owner—including physical harm, behavioural issues, and missed emergency cues.

🐾 Risks to the Dog

-Ingesting harmful objects: Dogs can quickly sn**ch up toxic foods, sharp items, or choking hazards from the ground. If you're looking at your phone, you might miss it until it's too late.
- Exposure to environmental hazards: Hot pavement, road salt, broken glass, or snakes can injure your dog’s paws or cause illness. Distracted walkers often overlook these threats.
- Unnoticed distress or reactivity: Dogs show subtle signs of anxiety or discomfort when encountering other dogs, people, or loud noises. Missing these cues can lead to fights or fear-based behaviours.
- Traffic and leash dangers: Even on a leash, a dog can dart into traffic or get tangled if not properly guided. A distracted owner may not react in time.

🚶‍♀️ Risks to the Owner

- Tripping and falling: Looking at your phone increases the chance of stumbling over uneven pavement, curbs, or even your own dog.
- Collisions with cyclists or vehicles: You may not notice fast-moving hazards like bikes or scooters until it’s too late.
- Increased injury rates: Studies show a rise in human injuries during dog walks due to distraction, especially from phones.
- Missed training opportunities: Walks are prime time for reinforcing good behaviour. Distraction undermines consistency and bonding.

⚠️ Behavioural and Emotional Consequences

- Weakened bond: Dogs thrive on interaction and attention. Constant phone use can make them feel ignored, leading to frustration or withdrawal.
- Reduced situational awareness: You might miss signs of aggression, fear, or illness—especially in unfamiliar environments.

Sometimes we have to look at our phones, but sometimes we dont.
Don't forget your dog wants your attention too!!
