What a fantastic way to wrap up our MAV Regional Tour at the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership in Moe!

The day reminded us to trust ourselves as teaching professionals and affirmed that we are the experts in our own classrooms — best placed to make informed pedagogical decisions about what our learners need and how they learn best.

We’re proud to continue supporting our regional members in ways that are meaningful, responsive, and tailored to their contexts. 💙

These events couldn't happen without the support of the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership, Moe Albert Street Primary School, Di Siemon, Oxford University Press Australia, Jen Bowden, & Di Liddell

Today’s Number Facts post turns the spotlight to multiplication.

Victoria’s Arc website talks about knowing times tables but also emphasises that ‘Using number patterns and number properties makes learning the multiplication facts easier’ https://arc.educationapps.vic.gov.au/learning/sites/mcc/VCMNA155/Recall-multiplication-and-related-division-facts-up-to-10-x-10.

An approach focusing on pattern spotting uncovers properties of specific numbers (like multiples of 2 and 5) and general properties such as commutativity, associativity and the distributive property. Teachers can then support students to build number sense and rather than see times tables as a list of isolated facts, instead understand multiplication facts in a predictable, logical system

Some resources that support such an approach include:
🔗 Properties of Multiplication and Division - A deep dive from the New Zealand curriculum based on specific examples, with lots of visual representations to support understanding -
https://newzealandcurriculum.tahurangi.education.govt.nz/what-s-going-on---properties-of-multiplication-and-division/5637169399.p

🔗 The How Many Facts? Video – this animated video shows how the number of facts to be learned are not 100, but around 38 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSb40J9pcck. This Paul Swan video takes a similar approach to making the full multiplication chart seem more accessible - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg_6GlnwHV4

🔗 Maths300 subscribers should check out the highly visual Tackling Times Tables resource - https://www.maths300.com/lessons/ODFNYXRoc0xlc3NvbjMwMA==

Finally 🔗 Table Patterns Go Wild – is an interesting activity from nrich that encourages students to explore the visual patterns mapped out by the times tables on a hundreds grid -
https://nrich.maths.org/problems/table-patterns-go-wild

By highlighting these patterns and properties, we can empower students to derive facts they don't yet know and build their confidence and work towards fluency with their multiplication facts.

It’s also good to remember how we build up to knowing multiplication facts through foundational knowledge - the ‘critical stepping stones’ along the way as Ange Rogers discusses in this fun Karate Kid-themed blog -

It’s been fantastic working with the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership (VATL) on the Leading Mathematics program for a second year!Over the past term, MAV has been proud to deliver two modules of this important initiative to mathematics leaders right across Victoria. The engagement, collaboration, and commitment from participants have been inspiring, and we’re excited to see the impact this work will have in schools statewide.

There are still opportunities to join the East Melbourne intake, which will now commence with a delayed start in May. If you’ve been considering taking part, this is a great chance to get involved.
