Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement.

They play a key role in protecting your eyes from long-term damage caused by UV rays.

Bupa Optical Head of Clinical Karen Makin said: “In Australia, owning a good pair of sunglasses is an absolute necessity. This is because we have one of the highest UV radiation levels in the world, with a skin cancer rate to match.”

Here’s why they’re an everyday essential.

Bupa's Psychological Health and safety Leader Chanel Nesci said: "Seeing others with their families can be deeply painful for those spending the holidays alone or finding it difficult to feel truly connected to those around them.”

She while many will be experiencing love, excitement, relaxation and joy this Christmas, it's important to be aware of those around us who may not be feeling the same, ad show empathy.

Mum-of-two Nikki says she’s constantly surprised by how quickly her kids can create online content.

But as a parent, it’s a delicate balancing act to help kids navigate the digital world, understand what they’re seeing, and keep screen time safe.

"I'm always looking for support on how to navigate parenting. It’s this battle between understanding that today’s kids are on screens—they need access—but also making sure it’s a safe place for them," she says.

Through the Bupa Foundations we are supporting Black Dog Institute run Teens & Screens, a set of free, evidence-based resources for junior and senior students to help students develop healthy screen habits, manage their digital wellbeing, and engage critically with online content
