Orygen is the world’s leading research and knowledge translation organisation focusing on mental ill-health in young people. At Orygen, our leadership and staff work to deliver cutting-edge research, policy development, innovative clinical services, and evidence-based training and education to ensure that there is continuous improvement in the treatments and care provided to young people experiencing mental ill-health. Our work has created a new, more positive approach to the prevention and treatment of mental disorders, and has developed new models of care for young people with emerging disorders. This work has been translated into a worldwide shift in services and treatments to include a primary focus on getting well and staying well, and health care models that include partnership with young people and families. We’re so excited to introduce you to ScrollSafe! ✨

We know social media is a central part of young people’s lives, with about 97% of Australian teens using social media daily.

And it can be great! But sometimes, it can get overwhelming, or even mess with mood and wellbeing.

That’s where ScrollSafe comes in. This new suite of resources, developed with the support of the Victorian Government, has tailored advice for everyone – parents, educators, clinicians and, of course, teens themselves (there’s even a handy TL;DR sheet for short attention spans!).

BIG news from us, and *great* news for young people!

All young people in Australia aged 15-25 can now access free, personalised mental health support thanks to the nationwide expansion of our groundbreaking digital platform MOST.

MOST is not just another mental health app. It offers one-on-one professional support, as well as access to peer workers, self-directed therapy and a safe, moderated online community.

MOST is backed by over 15 years of research, including studies that show it’s both engaging and effective in supporting young people’s mental health. And MOST is made by us, Orygen – Australia's Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health.

While referrals from mental health professionals remain a vital pathway for young people to connect with MOST’s services, this new nationwide easy-access will support young people who may not be engaged with other services.

So grateful to and for highlighting our work and the importance of investing in youth mental health in Parliament today. With growing support across all parties – and the government’s ongoing commitment to young people’s mental health – we have real momentum to make meaningful progress against Australia’s youth mental health crisis.

What was even better than seeing past and present friends and colleagues together to celebrate 20 years of youth IPS leadership at Orygen?

Seeing and hearing from so many young people who were former IPS participants, like Gaby Duran-Lopez (pictured), who shared how her IPS vocational specialist helped kickstart her promising career in banking as part of her recovery.

Not much epitomises Orygen's ethos of 'research for real-life outcomes' quite like IPS, which unlocks the powerful benefits of work and study as part of a young person's recovery from mental ill-health.

While there can be side effects to taking clozapine, many feel that the benefits outweigh the risks.

That's because it’s a medication which can help reduce symptoms of hallucinations and delusions, and for some, improve quality of life and mental wellbeing.

Because clozapine comes with specific requirements such as regular physical health tests, understanding this and possible side effects is important for those considering the medication.

That's the focus of a new guide, co-designed with lived experience, free to access here: https://bit.ly/3L2Z3r0

A huge thank you to the young people who shared their lived experiences to inform and shape these resources!

Research tells us that work, training and education helps young people recover from mental ill-health.

It's this principle that drives Orygen's Youth IPS Centre of Excellence, and it's why we're so excited to be collaborating with Japan's National Centre for Neurology and Psychiatry (NCNP) to share and apply evidence-based practice on vocational support for young people with mental ill-health.

Funded by an Australia-Japan Foundation grant, this collaboration aims to advance growth and innovation in the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) field.

"This partnership is a chance to share knowledge, learn from Japan's innovations, and help more young people around the world build meaningful futures," said Gina Chinnery (pictured), Orygen's Director of Employment & Education Partnerships.
