Victoria's medical research institutes are delivering groundbreaking, meaningful work – but without sufficient investment, the sector's future is at risk.

Orygen was proud to be among Victoria's leading research institutes at Parliament Gardens this week, supporting this important Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) VIC initiative.

For more from AAMRI VIC and ways to get involved, see the post below.

Today is : an important celebration of trans pride, inclusion and acceptance.

Trans and gender-diverse young people deserve to feel comfortable and safe to express their whole self, in every context – including when accessing mental health support.

Creating these affirming, welcoming spaces is everyone's responsibility.

Trans, gender-diverse and gender-questioning young people, their families, carers and loved ones, are always welcome here at Orygen and across our five headspace centres in north-west Melbourne. This includes access to support services including counselling, peer support, gender affirming medical care, and primary GP care.

AI for mental health is here – and major new funding will enable an Orygen Digital and The University of Melbourne team led by Dr Isabelle Scott to research safer, more fit-for-purpose models.

Isabelle spoke to The Sydney Morning Herald, alongside youth advocates including Orygen Youth Advisory Council member Adriel Appathurai, about what the Wellcome Trust grant will mean for the next generation of digitally-delivered care.

Youth mental health, firmly on the global agenda 🌍

Orygen Executive Director, Prof. Patrick McGorry, had the privilege of meeting King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark last week at headspace South Melbourne, alongside headspace CEO Jason Trethowan and the wider team.

First developed in 2007, the headspace model now supports young people through services in over 150 communities across Australia, and has been implemented internationally – including in Denmark.

Their Majesties' visit underscored a common purpose: championing better mental health outcomes for all young people, in Australia, Denmark and around the world 🌱

The United Nations theme for International Women's Day this year is ‘Balance the Scales’, emphasising the importance of representation in all aspects of life, including leadership and the systems that shape our lives.

Academia remains an area where women and gender-diverse people face structural barriers to progression and recognition, with women making up only about one-third of senior academic roles in Australian universities.

At Orygen, we are proud to have gender parity in our Executive Leadership Team, on our Board and among our 23 head researchers. At the professorial level, seven of our 15 professors are women. We recognise there is further progress to be made in this cohort, and across other areas of underrepresentation.

We also acknowledge that as youth mental health is a field dominated by women, parity should be a baseline, and gender diversity remains underrepresented.

True equity is more than numbers: it’s about sustained representation, inclusion and influence, and about supporting systems that ensure women and gender-diverse people don’t just reach senior roles, but can stay, thrive and lead the way towards balanced scales across society.

We encourage using IWD and this year’s theme to reflect on existing imbalances, and to consider the role we all have to play in championing gender equity.

While many young people experience suicidal thoughts and behaviours, it's estimated that fewer than half access support – and digital tools could help address this.

That's the key finding of new Orygen research, which explored how young people and clinicians use and perceive digital tools for the management of suicidal thoughts and/or self-harm.

The study also highlighted the need for guidance on integrating digital tools into clinical practice, which is the focus of a world-first set of guidelines free to access here: https://bit.ly/3MdTdUu
