LGBTQIA+ people continue to experience significantly higher levels of mental ill-health than heterosexual people, and new research from Orygen and La Trobe University has shown why addressing stigma from every level matters.

The study found that levels of internalised sexual stigma among same-sex couples remain remarkably stable over time. Higher internalised stigma was linked to living in less LGBTQIA+ affirming regions, lower support from family and friends, and hiding one’s identity – highlighting the need to address stigma at multiple levels.

Over 1.1 million Australians live with an eating disorder – and almost 1 in 3 are under 19.

Since 2012, eating disorders in 10 to 19-year-olds have risen by 86%. Early intervention saves lives, yet treatments have not improved in decades.

With your help these holidays, A/Prof. Andrea Phillipou and her team can continue leading world-first work to change this.

Every dollar to Orygen's Christmas Appeal will help advance new pathways for early diagnosis and treatment, giving young people real hope for recovery.

Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the awful events in Bondi.

Many young people may be feeling unsettled, overwhelmed or numb after what they’ve seen or heard. There’s no ‘right’ way to respond to something like this.

These reflections from Orygen research and lived experience experts focus on what can support recovery after a traumatic event, especially connection, self-compassion and listening to your body.

If you’re struggling or need extra support:

The youth mental health crisis is a global problem, and health care systems around the world are under strain.

In response, Orygen and The University of Melbourne are building MOST-Nexus: a digital mental health platform backed by $14m in funding from Wellcome.

It blends AI-powered personalisation with proven support models to help young people access care when and where they need it. Find out more: https://bit.ly/4pII38X

The advice young men receive after a breakup is often the opposite of what they actually want and need.

That's among the key findings of a new study led by Orygen Research Fellow Michael Wilson, which has highlighted why we – as a society – need to better respond to young men's emotional pain.

As Australia implements age-based restrictions on social media, Orygen has published new research that shows Australians of all ages are being exposed to self-harm and su***de-related content on these platforms – and those aged 15-25 are especially vulnerable.

"Our findings show that not only are the majority of young people online exposed to self-harm and su***de-related content, most find it distressing and an important minority find it harmful," said Prof. Jo Robinson, the study's lead author and Head of Su***de Prevention at Orygen.

"We urgently need to take action here, but simply restricting access to under 16s doesn't adequately address this issue."

A/Prof. Andrea Phillipou and her team are at the global forefront in advancing eating disorders research and care.

They've discovered a world-first biological marker for anorexia that could revolutionise early diagnosis, and are developing new non-invasive brain treatments to give young people real hope for recovery.

But this life-changing work is at immediate risk of discontinuing due to underfunding.

Australia has the highest rates of eating disorders in the world, and yet research funding only amounts to ~$2 for every person in need.

That's why we're asking you, our community, to please consider a donation to Orygen these holidays on behalf of a loved one.

Every dollar will directly help propel progress towards improved outcomes for the 1.1 million Australians living with an eating disorder.

In girls, oestradiol (E2) is a hormone that rises during puberty, even before any visible physical changes – and new Orygen research has revealed that early and more rapid exposure may increase the likelihood of mental ill-health.

Led by Orygen PhD student Muskan Khetan, the study tracked almost 3,000 girls across three years, and offers important implications for early intervention.

One week on, we're still feeling the love from when creativity and generosity filled the iconic Corner Hotel band room to support youth mental health 💛🎶

The inaugural Love Letter to Music, held by 3AW Breakfast hosts Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft, featured fabulous letters from Brihony Dawson, Jane Gazzo and Alan Howe, all while raising vital funds to support Orygen's work.

So grateful to Ross and Russel, the speakers, guests and Hard Yakka Workwear and Access Workwear & Safety for their support of the event 🥰
